Multiple teams enjoy undefeated starts to the summer basketball league

TENNERTON — Following an action-packed trio of opening day games for the 2022 Upshur County Summer Basketball League, the intensity was cranked up another notched for the remainder of the week one schedule, which wrapped up with games on both Wednesday and Thursday.  

On Wednesday, June 29’s first game, American Mineral (AMTC) beat Sam’s Pizza in a defensive struggle by a final score of 47-40. Kyran Larsen led the AMTC squad to a win with a team-high 13 points, while Carter Zuliani netted a game-high 17 points for the Sam’s Pizza team in a losing effort.  

In Wednesday’s second game, the CEC team dominated CP Imagery, beating them by 27 points, by a final score of 90-63. Victor Meeks posted an efficient 21 points to lead the CEC ram in scoring, while Storm Workman tried his best to keep the game in reach, recording a game-high 24 points for CP  Imagery in the loss.

The CEC offense continued to roll in the final game of the day, as they picked up their second lopsided win of the day against the Blades and Fades team, collecting a 19-point win, 80-61 win. Jacob Carder paced the CEC team in scoring 17 points in the win, while Blades & Fades’ Darius Dillard nearly accounted for half of his team’s offensive output, netting a game-high 25 points.  

Thursday’s action saw last year’s champions Ralph’s Furniture deliver a through beat down on the Strategy IT team by a final score of 88-54. Carl Buck led Ralph’s Furniture with 25 points in their first win, while Cordell Nicola led the Strategy IT squad with 18 points. 

Ralph’s Furniture kept rolling in their second game of the day, beating High Point Construction by a final score of 95-68, picking up another victory in dominate fashion. This time, Adrian Summerfield led Ralph’s Furniture in scoring in their second game dropping 20 points while former Buccaneer star Ryan Hurst acted as a one-man offensive wrecking crew amassing an astounding game-high 42 points for the High Point Construction team.

KBAM Builders beat High Point Construction by final score of 83-62. Chris Prescott enjoyed an amazing day scoring the basketball in spite of the loss, dropping 32 points as he showed tremendous fight keeping his team in the game, accounting for over half of his team’s overall offensive output. Garrett Hamrick scored 21 points, pacing the KBAM Builders offense in the victory. 

The next day, on Friday, July 1, the Upshur County Summer Basketball League wrapped up their first week of play with a four game slate.  

In Friday’s first game, Dairy Queen outlasted Blades & Fades in a very close, seemingly even-matched game, by a final score of 72-69. Andy Upton put the Dairy Queen team’s offense in his back, dropping a game-high 36 points, while Robert Conti was the Blades & Faces team’s hot-hand on the day, finishing as the team’s leading scorer with 19 points. 

In Friday’s second game, The Outpost picked up a 10-point win a 75-65 win over the CEC squad. Isaac Walker scored 23 points to pace The Outpost team’s offense in the win, while Drew Holcomb and Dawson Lilly each had 16 for CEC in a valiant losing effort.  

Friday’s third game saw On Point Athletics pick up a 75-70 win over TKS Contracting. Dalton Hamrick paced the On Point Athletics team in scoring with 18 points, while West Virginia Wesleyan College guard Shawn Moran had a game-high 21 points for TKS Contracting squad. 

In Friday’s fourth and final game, saw the On Point Athletics team collect their second win of the evening, as they downed KBAM Builders by a 70-57 score. Hamrick again led the On Point Athletics’ offense with 19 points, while Garrett Hamrick led KBAM Builders with a game-high 20 points. 

At the end of the first week of play, defending champions Ralph’s Furniture sits atop the Division 1 standings with a 2-0 record, while On Point Athletics are the top of the Division 2 standings with a flawless 4-0 record. The Upshur County Basketball League will continue play this coming Tuesday, July 12, following a slight break to celebrate Independence Day. TKS Contracting will square off against CP Imagery in the 6 p.m. time slot, followed by On Point Athletics against Blades & Fades, 7 p.m., and finally CEC against Dairy Queen team at 8 p.m. On Wednesday, defending champs Ralph’s Furniture will take on PrePlayed Media in the day’s first game at 6 p.m., following by KBAM Builders versus Pre Played Media in the 7 p.m. time slot, before the day’s final game which will see KBAM Builders take on Ralph’s Furniture at 8 p.m.
