ROCK CAVE — One man is in custody after a multiple county police pursuit ended in a two vehicle crash on Wednesday, July 27.
According to a press release from the Upshur County Sheriff’s Department, at approximately 10:30 a.m., deputies with the Braxton County Sheriff’s office observed a 2022 white Mercedes in the parking lot of McDonald’s. After identifying the vehicle, deputies confirmed that it had been reported stolen out of Weston, W.Va. earlier that morning.
The release states that the Braxton County units attempted to stop the vehicle. Once the stop was initiated, the driver of the vehicle fled North on U.S. Route 19. With the pursuit being initiated, Lewis County Sheriff’s Department was notified. Units responded to the Ireland area in an attempt to intercept the Mercedes. Lewis County units were set up at the intersection of U.S. Route 19 and U.S. Route 4 in hopes to intercept the vehicle.
The release continued to explain that the driver of the vehicle turned North on U.S. Route 4 towards Rock Cave. At that time, Upshur County units positioned themselves just South of Rock Cave on U.S. Route 4. As the vehicle approached, stop sticks were deployed, which punctured the two left tires of the suspects vehicle. Once the vehicle passed, Upshur County units and West Virginia State Police unites joined the chase.
According to the Upshur County Sheriff’s Office, the pursuit continued onto U.S. Route 20 South for approximately a mile, where the driver lost control of the vehicle and struck and oncoming car, hitting the guardrail before coming to rest. When deputies called for the suspect to exit the vehicle, he refused, resulting in the deployment of a taser.
The suspect was identified as 28-year-old Christopher Bills, of Clarksburg. Bills is now facing charges or Fleeing with Reckless Indifference, Possession of Stolen Goods and Fleeing while Driving under the Influence.
Along with Braxton County Sheriff’s Office, Lewis County Sheriff’s Office and Upshur County Sheriff’s Office, Braxton County State Police, Upshur County State Police, Lewis County State Police also assisted. Banks District Volunteer Fire Department, Banks District EMS and Upshur County EMS were on scene following the crash.
