The West Virginia Wesleyan men’s basketball team welcomes No. 14 West Liberty to the Rockefeller Center on Wednesday (Dec. 1) at 7:30 p.m. before hitting the road for another MEC matchup at Wheeling on Saturday (Dec. 4) at 2 p.m.
Win Number One
Derek Sloan is in his first season as a head coach and picked up his first career victory at the helm after Wesleyan held off Seton Hill, 85-79 on Monday (Nov. 15) inside the Rockefeller Center.
Sloan was an assistant coach for WVWC men’s basketball before being elevated to head coach on Sept. 15, 2021.
Hibbitt’s Hot Start
Jayden Hibbitt has led the Bobcats in scoring in five of the first six games of the season including a career-high 26 points against Frostburg State on Saturday (Nov. 20).
Doing a Little Bit of Everything
Braeden McGrew spread out eight assists in the season opener at the IRMC/Hilton Garden Inn Classic versus the Crimson Hawks. He scored a season-high 13 points against Seton Hill. McGrew grabbed six rebounds and dished out three assists against Shepherd on Sunday (Nov. 28).
UVA Wise transfer Joseph Keenan buried five 3-pointers on Monday (Nov. 15) to help Wesleyan past Seton Hill.
Scouting No. 14 West Liberty
West Liberty is off to a 5-1 start after a close 82-81 loss in MEC play to Notre Dame (Ohio) on Tuesday (Nov. 23) before defeating reigning NCAA Division-II East Region champion Daeman by a final score of 63-61 on Monday (Nov. 29).
Pat Robinson averages a team-high 20.0 points per game while Bryce Butler averages 15.8 points per game and 6.8 rebounds a contest.
West Liberty alumnus Ben Howlett brings an impressive 114-19 overall record into the matchup while in his fifth season as head coach.
Wheeling is 1-5 overall and 0-2 in MEC competition in the middle of a five-game losing streak as of Tuesday (Nov. 30) after winning its season opener against East Stroudsburg.
Senior guard Jarett Haines is averaging 17.3 points per game on 50.6 percent shooting from the field. Fellow guard Jordan Reid paces the Cardinals in points per game at 19.0 through five games.
