BUCKHANNON — When I was asked to write an article about myself, I was stumped. Who is Parris Freeman? Why does she need to be known? I have been interested in news media, journalism and digital media since I was in elementary school reading off school announcements to my student body and continuing to do so up until I graduated high school. Originally from the busy streets of Maryland to the sleepy town of Buckhannon, I left my mother, grandma and siblings behind to support me back home while I set off to West Virginia Wesleyan College in 2014. I am currently a senior media studies major with a minor in theater. Throughout my college career I have been involved with the school’s newspaper The Pharos writing stories and drawing up comics, and C-92 FM Buckhannon’s Best Mix school radio where I had a two hour talk show with the Wesleyan alumna Brianna Underwood, where one hour we talked about what’s happening in the political world and the second hour we talk about celebrity gossip, conspiracy theories and scary stories. I am a writer and one of the social media directors of HerCampus, which is a female-based media outlet for college women. Now finally, I am interning at The Re-cord Delta as a staff reporter and providing video news announcements. I couldn’t be happier than to be presented with this wonderful opportunity. When I graduate this May 4th, my big-time goal is to move out of West Virginia and have a radio station where I talk about what’s happening in the community that may get overlooked. Also, new and upcoming music, new artists and giving recognition to these who would like to put their name out there and other topics. But until I reach your airwaves, I will be providing stories for the college and Buckhannon population.
