MEC releases cross country preseason polls: WVWC men are eighth; women picked third


BRIDGEPORT — The University of Charleston is the favorite to win the Mountain East Conference title in men's cross country this spring, while Davis & Elkins has been chosen as the team to beat in the conference in women's cross country.

After the NCAA cancelled fall championships, the MEC moved its cross country season from its traditional slot in the fall to the spring semester.

The season will span over a month and culminate with the championship at Ogleaby Resort on Saturday, March 20.

On the men's side, Charleston was picked first with 81 points (nine first-place votes).

Davis & Elkins and West Liberty tied for runner-up in the poll with 65 points.

Concord was just behind in fourth with 64 points and had the lone remaining first-place vote.

Frostburg State was next with 41 points, followed by Fairmont State (33), Wheeling (32), West Virginia Wesleyan (28), Glenville State (25) and Alderson Broaddus (16).

On the women's side, Davis & Elkins landed atop the poll with 81 points (nine first-place votes).

West Liberty was next with 72 points, followed by West Virginia Wesleyan with 60 points (one first-place vote).

Charleston was picked fourth with 56 points, finishing ahead of Concord (49) and Wheeling (42). Fairmont State (37), Alderson Broaddus (23), Frostburg State (21) and West Virginia State (9) completed the women's poll.
