MEC men’s and women’s tournament pairings set; WVWC men a seven seed


BRIDGEPORT — The seedings and pairings for the 2020 Mountain East Conference Men's and Women’s Basketball Tournaments, presented by The Healthplan, have been finalized after the conclusion of Saturday’s action.

The top 10 teams qualify for the tournament at WesBanco Arena, with the top six seeds earning byes.

On the men’s side, West Liberty, the No. 1 seed for the tournament, captured its sixth MEC regular season title in the last seven years earlier in the week.

The Hilltoppers are seeking its second MEC Tournament title, though, after having won the title in 2017.

The other teams receiving first-round bye are: Charleston, Fairmont State, West Virginia State, Wheeling and Glenville State.

West Virginia Wesleyan is the No. 7 seed and will open the tournament against 10th-seeded Urbana on Wednesday night at 6 p.m., who clinched a berth on the final day of the regular season winning at the buzzer against Notre Dame. Concord is seeded eighth and will take on ninth-seeded Notre Dame at 8:15 p.m. on Wednesday night.

On the women’s side, Glenville State claimed the regular season title and is the top seed for this year’s tournament for the fourth-straight year.

The Pioneers are seeking their fourth MEC Tournament title and third in as many years.

Notre Dame is the No. 2 seed, followed by Charleston, Concord, Urbana and Fairmont State. Those six teams earned first-round byes.

Wheeling is seeded seventh, and will take on 10th-seeded Davis & Elkins in the opening round of the tournament on Wednesday at noon. Eighth-seeded West Liberty will take on ninth-seeded West Virginia State on Wednesday at 2:15 p.m.
