ST. MARY’S — The Upshur County Elks Lodge #1736, hosted their annual Hoop Shoot on Saturday, February 12, 2022. This is the 50th Anniversary for the Hoop Shoot Contest at the Elks.
The 2021-2022 Champion is nine year old Jaxon McDaniel’s, a fourth grader of Tennerton Elementary School. The Elks Lodge Hoop Shoot Contest is for ages 8 to 13 and is a ‘foul shooting’ type of contest. The contest is broken into Local, District, State, Regional and National levels. The goal is to be named in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Upshur County’s local Hoop Shoot Chairman for the 2021-2022 season was Scott Wilson, of Buckhannon. The chairman position changes every year, as a new season begins.
McDaniels is the son of Laura and Andrew McDaniels of Buckhannon. He earned the title of the 2022 W. Va. State Elks Hoop Shoot contest for the eight to nine year age group. McDaniels was named the male Champion of the 2022 Hoop Shoot held in St. Mary’s, W. Va. with 13/25 fouls shots.
McDaniels won the division and advanced to the State Regional Competition, which was held in Elkins in January. He has been playing basketball since the 2019-2020 season, when he was 7-years-old.
Andrew McDaniels expressed, “I am so very proud of the way Jaxon has handled everything and the work he has put in during his youth basketball season and especially for the local Hoop Shoot contest.”
Mother, Mrs. Laura McDaniels noted, “I have been most proud of his humility and good sportsmanship. Following his win at St. Mary’s, Jaxon was sure to fist-bump all the other competitors and tell them ‘Great job!’”
The Hoop Shoot and this Stockert Youth Community Center basketball season has given him a real boost in confidence. “I feel so good, hopefully I can do it again and this time shoot a 25/25 foul shot”, said Jaxon.
McDaniels will be going to the Southeast Central Region 10 Elks Hoop Shoot Semi-Finals in Frederick, Maryland on March 12, 2022. This region includes West Virginia, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware. This is an Elks Lodge sponsored, all expenses-paid weekend event for competitors and their immediate family members to enjoy. The winners from this competition will advance to the National Hoop Shoot in Chicago, Illinois on April 30, 2022.
Jaxon comes from a family of Hoop Shooters including his dad, Grandfather Ed McDaniels and great uncles in the McDaniels family, who have all participated in the competition. McDaniels wanted to thank everyone who has supported him along the way.
