McDaniels leads Lady Bucs past Philip Barbour, 65-36

Shelby McDaniels (1) of the Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs drives past Philip Barbour’s Bailey Nestor (22) during the first half of their Big 10 Conference contest Friday night in Philippi. McDaniels scored a game-high 22 points as the Lady Bucs won, 65-36.

PHILIPPI – “We wanted to show that what happened Wednesday night isn’t the way we play basketball,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Rob Kittle.

What happened last Wednesday was an uncharacteristic 39-point loss to Morgantown.

The Lady Bucs certainly made that point as they had little trouble putting away the Philip Barbour Lady Colts in a 65-36 victory here Friday night in a Big 10 Conference clash.

“We came out with some energy that we had been lacking,” stated Kittle. “I was very proud of the we came out tonight and played.”

Shelby McDaniels led the charge as she scored a game-high 22 points going eight-for-12 from the floor and a perfect four-for-four from the line.

There was no slow start for the Lady Bucs this time.

Leading by an 8-6 margin, Audrey Gaudet knocked down two free throws, McDaniels darted inside for a lay-up, Gaudet came back with another free throw and McKenzie Kittle hit a jumper for a 8-0 run giving the Lady Bucs a 16-6 lead.

Alyssa Hill closed out the quarter for the Colts with a free throw as B-U led heading into the second quarter by a 16-7 margin.

With B-U up 18-9, Kittle took over the game for the next two minutes as she scored seven straight points with a pair of jumpers and a 3-pointer.

“McKenzie was shooting the ball really well tonight,” Kittle said about his daughter’s performance. “She got some open looks, we ran our offense, and she knocked them down when she got the ball. She is the reason I want coach. It’s exciting to see her play well.”

Gaudet kept the offense going scoring on a lay-up, McDaniels connected on a long jumper and Leigh Ann Bennett capped off a 15-0 Lady Buc run that Kittle started with a lay-up.

That treated the Lady Bucs to a 31-9 lead with 3:13 left in the half.

Philip Barbour went on a 10-5 run to make it a 36-19 contest, but McDaniels sank two free throws and Bennett went inside for a lay-up to give the Lady Bucs a 40-19 advantage at the intermission.

Philip Barbour’s Emma Kennedy scored the first two points of the second half, but the Lady Bucs went on another run, this one an 8-0 jaunt to take a 48-21 lead with 2:12 gone in the third quarter.

During the run, Bennett scored a basket, McDaniels knocked down two shots and Gaudet made a lay-up.

B-U took a 58-30 lead into the fourth-quarter.

At that point, Kittle played his bench the final eight minutes of the game. It was also the varsity debut for Kiara Woods and Rachel Long as they were called up for this game.

B-U won the fourth quarter by a 7-6 count with Ciara Melton scoring four points, Long two and Alayna Nesbit one.

“Hopefully some of our younger players are starting to get comfortable at the varsity level,” Kittle said “The speed of the game is so much different up here. They played quality minutes tonight and did a great job for us. They handled themselves very well.”

The Lady Bucs shot 45.5 percent from the floor hitting on 25 of their 55 field goals.

Behind McDaniels in the scoring column was Gaudet who had 11 and Kittle who tallied 10 points.

Ashley Hill paced the Philip Barbour offense with 11 points.

The Lady Colts dropped to 4-11 overall and 2-7 in the Big 10.

Buckhannon-Upshur improved to 10-6 overall and 7-2 in the Big 10.

The Lady Bucs will return to action Friday when they host Lewis County at 7:30 p.m.
