Martin James Warner, age 81, formerly of Buckhannon, died Thursday, May 7, 2020, at the Salem Genesis Center in Salem, WV.
He was born in Upshur County on March 16, 1939, a son of the late Martin and Madeline Mildred McVaney Warner. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two sisters: Carol Ann Warner Chomicz and Phyllis Gene Warner; one niece Dana Chomicz Cox; and one great nephew John Franck.
He is survived by one daughter, Wendy and husband Matthew Day of Catlett, VA; two grandsons: Turner Martin and Ethan Mathew Day; one brother-in-law, James Chomicz; niece Laura and husband Chris Franck; nephew Doug Chomicz; and great nephew Alex Franck.
Mr. Warner was a graduate of Buckhannon-Upshur High School, then received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from West Virginia Wesleyan College and a Master’s Degree in History from Marshall University. He was a teacher for Kanawha County Schools before moving back to Upshur County, where he served as head custodian for Buckhannon-Upshur Intermediate School for many years. He was a life-long student of history and a current events enthusiast, as well as an avid reader.
The body will be cremated and a graveside memorial service will be held at a later date at the Heavner Cemetery.
