BUCKHANNON — A man died as the result of an apparent drug overdose Wednesday in the Sheetz parking lot.
Buckhannon Police Chief Matt Gregory said Andrew Carrier, 30, passed away in a car containing drug paraphernalia, although nothing clearly indicated the specific type of drug involved. Emergency responders were initially called to the Sheetz parking lot at 9:20 p.m. for a man who was in his vehicle and slumped over the console, according to Gregory.
The vehicle was on the side of the lot closest to the car wash.
“They arrived on scene and he wasn’t breathing,” Gregory said. “There was paraphernalia found in the car that he was in, but nothing definitive as far as a specific type [of drug].”
The paraphernalia included needles, a spoon, cotton swabs and multiple small baggies.
The Buckhannon Fire Department and Upshur County EMS also responded.
“It remains under investigation because it is an apparent drug overdose,” Gregory said.
A medical examiner will determine if there needs to be an autopsy, and toxicology reports that could determine the type of drug ingested would be part of that, according to Gregory.
