BUCKHANNON — Spring into the warmer season by sprucing up your house and yard.
That’s what the city of Buckhannon is encouraging city and county residents to do during April, which has been designated Make It Shine Month, according to public works director Jerry Arnold.
In order to make it easier for residents to straighten up their houses and properties by discarding what they don’t need, the city is hosting several community clean-up days. During these days, residents may discard a maximum of two pick-up truck loads of materials for free at the city’s waste transfer station, located at 444 Mud Lick Road — so long as they are subscribing customers to Buckhannon’s waste collection service.
Community clean-up days will be April 1 and April 8 for city residents and April 8 and April 29 for county customers living outside the city limits. Bring materials to the waste transfer station between 7:30 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. on all dates. Anyone who wishes to take advantage of the community clean-up days needs to present a current city of Buckhannon waste collection receipt as well as a photo ID.
Arnold noted that tires will be excluded from the community clean-up days; however, a tire amnesty day – sponsored by the W.Va. Department of Environmental Protection – is scheduled for Saturday June 3, he said.
The public works director said spring is an ideal time to get a fresh start, noting the importance of city and county customers doing their part to beautify Buckhannon and the surrounding area.
“I think it’s important for people to participate because it makes our neighborhoods look better and our communities look better,” Arnold said. “Spring is the perfect time to spruce things up because everything is starting to bloom and get green. And it’s the perfect opportunity to do that without having to pay for disposal. If you’ve got things in the house that you don’t want, April is a great time to get rid of them. I think, for me, it’s the official kick-off of summer – it’s kind of that indicator that it’s time for the weather to get better and for us to get rid of winter.”
Also during April, the city and the Upshur County Solid Waste Authority have organized their annual Celebration of Recycling, which will take place at the Crossroads Recycling Center in the Walmart Parking lot. The Celebration of Recycling will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on April 21 and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 22. Handouts about recycling will be distributed and giveaways are scheduled to take place during the event.
Arnold said he invites everyone in Buckhannon and the Upshur County community to participate in Make It Shine Month activities.
“We encourage everyone to take advantage of it,” he said.
