Loudin goes for 23 points as Bucs pull away from Minutemen in 68-50 win

Noam Keith of the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers tries work the ball inside while being guarded by Lewis County’s Adam Watson (11) during the second quarter of their contest Wednesday night in Weston. Keith had two points and one rebound as the Buccaneers improved to 9-4 with a 68-50 win.

WESTON – Josh Loudin scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds to help the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers to a 68-50 win over the Lewis County Minutemen Wednesday night in Weston.

The senior forward/center was an impressive nine-for-12 from the field and four-of-five at the free throw line for his 23 points as the Bucs were able to pull away from a pesky Lewis County team in the fourth quarter for the 18-point win.

The Bucs never trailed in the contest as Will McCauley opened the game with a jumper and Loudin put in his first basket of the game to give B-U an early 4-0 lead.

A pair of free throws by Loudin gave the Bucs an 11-3 lead with three minutes left in the first quarter, but Lewis County ended the stanza on a 10-4 run to close the Buckhannon-Upshur advantage to two, at 15-13, heading into the second quarter.

Still up two, at 19-17, McCauley, Ryan Hurst and Loudin make consecutive baskets to put the Bucs up by a 25-17 score with 3:13 remaining in the half.

The Bucs built their lead up to nine, at 32-23, following a basket by Lamar Hurst, but Jaycob Smith launched a very long three-point shot at the top of the key that found the bottom of the net at the first-half buzzer as the Bucs owned a 32-26 lead at the intermission.

Lewis County scored the first two baskets of the third quarter to make it just a two-point game again, at 32-30, but McCauley scored on an inside jumper and Ryan Hurst turned in an old-fashioned three-point play to put the lead back to seven, at 37-30.

A 7-2 run by Lewis County shrunk the lead back to two, at 39-37, but the Bucs closed out the third quarter with an 11-3 run after Loudin hit a trey at the buzzer as the visitors took a 50-40 lead into the fourth quarter.

Loudin started the fourth quarter with a basket in the paint, Ryan Hurst uncorked a three-pointer and Loudin scored again on a putback for a 7-0 B-U run as the Bucs started to pull away from the Minutemen, up 57-40.

Lewis County closed the lead to 13 after a basket by Vincent Snuffer, at 59-46, with four minutes left but the Bucs never let Lewis County get any closer as they finished the game on a 9-4 run.

Following Loudin in the scoring column for the Bucs were McCauley with 12 points and Ryan Hurst and Lamar Hurst with nine each.

Smith paced Lewis County with 14 points while Snuffer added 13.

Lewis County dropped to 2-9 on the season.

The game was by far the best outing for the Bucs ball-handling wise as they committed a season low eight turnovers.

They improved to 9-4 on the season heading into Friday’s home game with Elkins.

They will play Grafton on the road Monday at 7 p.m. and then close out their regular season next Saturday hosting Jefferson.
