Local Elks Lodge Receives Membership Commendation

BUCKHANNON – Buckhannon Elks Lodge No. 1736 received a Grand Exalted Ruler Membership Commendation on Sat. March 30.

The award is for a record high number of new members from the Central District from the month of October.

The award was presented to Grand Exalted Ruler Michael Livesay by Central District Deputy Louise Hayes of the Mannington Elks Lodge No. 388.

The award was given during the District Deputy Clinic, which is a bi-annual meeting of the seven lodges of the Central District of West Virginia.

On the last day of the 2018 Elks National Convention, newly installed Grand Exalted Ruler Michael T. Luhr of Alaska installed his approximately 150 District Deputy Grand Exalted Rulers. Louise Hayes of Mannington is one of three from West Virginia. Her district is the Central District, of which Buckhannon Lodge is a part.

The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, formed in 1868, celebrated its 150th Anniversary last year and is one of the oldest and largest fraternal organizations in the United States.

Nineteen Lodges comprise the West Virginia Elks Association, which was formed from then existing lodges in the state in 1908.

Buckhannon Lodge received its charter at the 1948 National Convention and has been at its present location on North Kanawha Street since 1951.
