Local church youth group helping with disaster relief

BUCKHANNON — A county church youth group is planning a fundraiser to help with disaster relief.
Al Gibson, youth leader at Heaston Ridge UMC, said his youth group began supporting the Beckley distribution center for United Methodist Committee on Relief.
“They packed flood buckets and assembled health kits and did a lot of clean-up down there,” he said.
After those experiences, the youth group brain stormed ways they could continue to support the distribution center from Upshur County.
The idea for the barbecue and bluegrass event was born and will be held Sept. 23 from 4-7 p.m. at the Banks District Volunteer Fire Department.
The dinner is freewill.
“We are accepting cash and articles for flood buckets or health kits,” he said. Instructions on how to pack the cleaning kits and hygiene kits can be found at this link: http://www.umcor.org/UMCOR/Relief-Supplies.
Donations of new items such as shovels, mops, brooms, bleach, five-gallon buckets with lids, laundry detergent, liquid cleaners, dish soap, insect repellent, dust masks, dishwashing gloves, work gloves and dust masks are also acceptable. All items must be new in original packaging. No clothing donations are being accepted at this time.
The barbecue will be pulled pork with sides, desserts and drinks included. The event will feature music  from local groups such as The Shelter. The full music line-up is still being organized.
