FAIRVIEW – All good things must eventually come to an end and unfortunately they did for the Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School Little Lady Buc soccer team last Wednesday in their battle with North Marion Middle School.
The Little Lady Bucs started the season with a seven-game unbeaten streak posting a 6-0-1 record, but they suffered their first setback of the year with a 4-1 loss to North Marion.
The game saw North Marion dart out to a 4-1 lead at the half and the game would wind up with that same score at the end of 60 minutes of action.
“North Marion dealt us our first loss of the season,” acknowledged Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Bob Greenough. “They are a good team that played well and got out to an early lead on us.”
The lone goal for Buckhannon-Upshur belonged to Haley Triplett, who scored with a shot in the box with the assist going to Grace Queen late in the first half.
“In the first half we gave up a goal off a corner kick and a few balls over the top that we didn't handle as well as we usually have,” stated Greenough. “We made a few adjustments at the half to help cover their speed and size, but it wasn't enough to overcome the three-goal deficit.”
The Little Lady Bucs owned a disproportionate margin in shots-on-goal by a 25-10 margin.
“Overall we played a good game controlling the tempo for most of the match and outshot North Marion by a considerable number, but we struggled finishing against a tough keeper and some unlucky shots that just couldn't find the back of net,” remarked Greenough. “I give a lot of credit to these young Little Lady Bucs. They were down 4-1 for most of the second half but continued to play as a team building and pushing the attack relentlessly trying to get back in the game.”
The loss dropped the Little Lady Bucs to 6-1-1 on the season.
With the county going orange on the COVID-19 map, Greenough and his squad lost three games this week as they were slated to play Philippi, South Harrison and East Fairmont.
If the county returns to green or yellow next week, they will host Washington Irving Monday at 5:30 p.m. and then Bridgeport on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
