TENNERTON — The Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School junior varsity volleyball team remains undefeated after the Little Lady Bucs faced off against South Harrison Middle School in a home match on Monday, October 4, 2021. The junior varsity and varsity teams both secured wins in just two sets each.

For the JV game, Coach Sheena Westfall expressed, “The girls came out strong in the first set. Madelyn Tucker is someone who we have been waiting to come out of her shell and she did this evening! She finally seemed to be comfortable enough out on the floor. She had some good digs on the defensive end and led the team in serving.”

Tucker even used an approach for an attack at the net, which went over, but South Harrison was able to get a hand on the ball and stop it. Coach Westfall said Karson Karikoff and Kristine Frye also performed strong at the serving line Monday evening.

The varsity team’s win over South Harrison brought their record to 6-3 now. Coach Westfall stated, “Tonight was a good night for the girls. We celebrated our 8th graders this evening, which sometimes can be a distraction.” She said she was extremely proud of the girls for keeping their focus and handling their business.

All seven of the team’s 8th graders were able to see time on the floor in Monday’s match. Coach Westfall said, “Reagan Mason, along with Makenzie Egress, dominated at the serving line, both with 8 aces. Reagan has been doing a great job reading the floor and finding the open spot, making it hard to defend and receive her serves.”

According to Westfall, three of the team’s 8th graders have played volleyball for B-UMS all three years, while two have played two years, and two other members of the Little Lady Bucs are playing their first year. “It has been fun to watch their growth and development and love of the game. Those girls have also stepped up as leaders on this team,” the Coach noted. “They leave the drama at the door and just encourage and stay positive with each other from their fellow 8th graders, down to the 6th graders.”
