TENNERTON — Back on Wednesday, June 29 the Little Lady Buccaneers 12-and-under softball team welcomed Bridgeport to Tennerton for a home doubleheader. Coaches Brian McQuain, Chris Brown, Levi Bender, and Sarah Kesling had their group of girls ready to play as they swept both of the day’s games against Bridgeport.
In the first game, the Little Lady Bucs earned a hard-fought comeback win, falling behind early before storming back to beat Bridgeport by a final score of 15-13.
Bridgeport wasted no jumping out to an early 7-1 lead after the first inning of play. Bridgeport then added 5 more runs in the top of the second inning before B-U responded with 7 runs of their own in the bottom of the second to draw within striking distance with the score sitting at 12-8 heading into a decisive third inning.
In the third, the blazing hot Bridgeport bats finally cooled off, only putting up a single run in the top of the third inning, opening up an opportunity for the Little Lady Bucs to make a run. B-U seized on the opportunity, with the gurls mounting a furious third inning comeback, storming back by scoring seven runs in the inning and collecting a win in a rather high-scoring affair.
Offensively in game one of the doubleheader, the duo of Payton Brown and Faith Howes led the way for the Little Lady Bucs. Brown recorded a 2-3 mark at the plate, scoring 2 runs, and driving in an RBI, while Howes drove in a team-high 4 RBIs. The pair of Brown and Howes were complemented by strong games from Jaylee Wayts who scored 3 runs, Zoey Burr who drove in a pair of RBIs, Lena Rose Walker who scored 2 runs and stole a base, and Madison Knabenshue who went 1-2 from the plate, scored a pair of runs, drove in an RBI, and came away with a stolen base.
Defensively, Wayts and Burr both saw time in the pitcher’s circle for the Little Lady Bucs in game one, combining to allow 13 runs, 7 of which were earned, while walking 13 batters, and striking out 4.
Game two of the home doubleheader got off to a much smoother start for the Little Lady Bucs, as they wasted no time getting out to a hot start offensively, building a 5-3 lead after the first inning of play. The Little Lady Bucs pulled away for good, scoring 6 unanswered runs in the second inning, heading into the third inning sitting on a 11-3 lead. Although, Bridgeport tried to mount a late comeback, scoring 6 runs in the top of third, a late defensive stand cut the Little Indians run short, sealing an 11-9 win for the Little Lady Bucs.
Young multi-talented ace Jaylee Wayts helped the Little Lady Bucs survive a late scare, as she pitched a complete three-inning game in the circle for the Little Lady Bucs. In total, Wayts faced 21 batters, allowing 9 runs, only 2 of which were earned, while walking two batters and striking out 6. Wayts was efficient and effective all game long, showing off her velocity and control, throwing 44 total strikes on just 87 pitches.
Offensively, while the Little Lady Bucs had no trouble scoring, the runs came in spite of a tough game in terms of making contact at-the-plate as a team. While the Little Lady Bucs didn’t rack up a single hit, they showed off their high baseball I.Q. with some sound decisions rounding the base paths. Seemingly every B-U batter that the Bridgeport pitching staff walked, ended up scoring, as the Little Lady Bucs capitalized on every miscue from their opponents. Pyper Mazarek, Makenna Marsh, Janessa Smith and Rylee Chapman each scored two runs apiece, while Adelaide McVay scored a run and drove-in a team-high two RBIs. Mazarek and Marsh also tied to lead the team in stolen bases, with two apiece. Linnea Brown, Kolbi Orr, Mady Linger, Hailey Bowers and Sofia Kesling all got in on the scoring, each driving in an RBI to round out a solid team-effort from the Little Lady Bucs in game two of the doubleheader to secure the sweep.
