Little Lady Buc cagers win Preston County Holiday Tournament

KINGWOOD – The Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School Little Lady Bucs coasted to the title in the Preston County Holiday Tournament last  week, dealing Bruceton a 44-14 licking Thursday and knocking off Suncrest in the championship clash by a 34-24 count Saturday.

The Little Lady Bucs stormed into an 18-4 first-quarter lead against Bruceton, with Kenna Maxwell canning eight points, Lexi Kelley and Kendal Currence tallying four apiece and Ashley Catlin adding two.

With Maxwell banging in five markers, Kelley recording four and Kyndal Davis contributing two, the Buckhannon girls claimed the second period by a 11-4 count to build a 29-6 halftime lead.

They took the third stanza by a 12-2 spread on seven points by Gabby Parke, two each by Currence and Kelley, and a free throw by Cat Neely to make it 41-8.

Parke bombed in a three-pointer in the final segment, which went to Bruceton, 6-3.

Maxwell led the scoring with 13 points, with Kelley and Parke following with 10 apiece. Currence tallied six, Catlin and Davis had two each, and Neely chipped in with one.

In the title match-up, Currence fired in two buckets and Maxwell lofted in a three-pointer to get the Little Lady Bucs off to a 7-3 advantage in the first quarter.

They went on an 18-2 rampage in the second canto, with Parke blasting in a pair of treys, Currence sinking five charity throws, Neely, Kelley and Maxwell hitting for two markers apiece, and Davis adding a foul shot. They enjoyed a 25-5 lead at the half.

Suncrest claimed the third period by a 6-3 count and the final quarter 13-6.

Kelley headed the Little Lady Bucs with 11 points, with Currence following with 10. Maxwell had seven markers, Parke tallied six, Davis contributed three, and Neely and Henderson added two each.

Coach Tiffany Board’s Little Lady Bucs improved to 7-3 going into Thursday night’s home contest with Robert L. Bland.

They will visit Philippi Tuesday.
