Little Bucs go 1-1 in home Kick-off Tournament

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School Little Buccaneers split in their Kick-off basketball tourney Dec. 4-5, dropping a 43-32 decision to Robert L. Bland’s Patriots in their opener, but bouncing back to claim a 56-37 triumph over Washington Irving’s Hilltoppers in the consolation clash.

The Little Bucs took a 7-4 first-quarter lead in the opening period in the contest with Robert L. Bland, with Ian Strader canning a three-pointer and a deuce, and Luke Yardley hitting a two.

But the Patriots went on a 15-6 run in the second canto to romp into a 19-13 lead, with Tanner Griffith leading the way with 11 points.

The Patriots captured the third quarter by an 18-11 spread to increase their lead to 13, at 37-24, going into the final segment. The Little Bucs took the fourth stanza, 8-6.

Strader led Buckhannon’s balanced scoring with seven markers, with Bryson Johnston, Yardley and Nathaniel Ringer following with six apiece. Malaki Williams, Landon Marple and Elijah Mahaffey each added two, and Jaden Westfall contributed one.

Westfall yanked down five rebounds, Williams and Strader grabbed four each, and Yardley, Dom English and Mahaffey had three apiece.

Westfall also had their four assists, three steals and one block.

Griffith led the Patriots with a game-high 28 points.

In the consolation fracas, the Little Bucs led the first quarter by a 10-8 edge on two buckets by Johnston, one each by Strader and Westfall, and a pair of free throws by Ringer.

With Westfall tallying five markers, Strader bombing in a trey, Williams and tossing in a goal apiece, and Yardley adding a charity point, the Little Bucs prevailed by a 13-8 count in the second quarter to move into a 23-16 lead at the half.

They claimed the third period by a 13-9 margin, with Ringer lofting in a three-pointer, and Strader, Johnston, Yardley and Ryan Kelley knocking down a regular basket apiece. They went into the final six minutes with a 36-25 advantage.

The Little Bucs exploded to capture the fourth canto by a 20-13 spread, with Strader banging in six points, Johnston hitting four, and Westfall, Yardley, Mahaffey, Ringer and Landon Marple chipping in with two each.

Strader paced the scoring with 13 markers, with Westfall and Johnston following with 11 and 10, respectively. Ringer had seven, Yardley had five, Marple had four, and Kelley, Williams and Mahaffey each added two.

Strader topped them in rebounding with 10; Strader, Johnston and Westfall dished out two assists apiece; Ringer, Mahaffey and Westfall each notched two steals, and Strader recorded two blocks.

Jonas Worden tallied 15 points for the Hilltoppers.

The Little Bucs will travel to Philippi Tuesday to face the Bulldogs. They were to have entertained Taylor County Monday and Mountaineer (Morgantown) Thursday.
