BRIDGEPORT – It just wasn’t meant to be for the Buckhannon-Upshur Middle Little Bucs in their Mid-8 Conference championship battle with the Bridgeport Braves Wednesday evening at Wayne Jamison Field.
The Little Bucs fell behind early and it just snowballed for them as they lost a 60-0 decision in a game played almost entirely in a pouring rainstorm.
The Little Bucs had to punt the ball away on their first possession after failing to get a first down.
With Bridgeport taking over at the Little Buc 44-yard line, Zach Rorhig scored on the first play of scrimmage for Bridgeport as he went over the left side for the score with just 1:04 gone off the first-quarter clock.
Rorhig went over left tackle for the two-point conversion to state the Braves to an 8-0 lead.
The Little Bucs had to punt on their next possession as well giving the ball to the Braves a their own 41-yard line
They were in the end zone four plays later as Aidan Sparks went up the middle for a 28-yard scoring run.
Rorhig ran in the conversion as Bridgeport took a 16-0 lead with 2:04 left in the opening quarter.
Bridgeport took over the ball at B-UMS 40-yard line after holding them on downs.
Sparks took a hand-off on the first play of the drive and went between the tackles for a 40-yard scamper with 28 seconds left in the first quarter.
Luke Yardley hauled down Rorhig on the conversion run, but the Braves led 22-0.
The Little Bucs picked up their first, first down of the game but fumbled the ball away on the play with Bridgeport recovering at the Little Buc 28-yard line.
The Braves were in the end zone again just two plays later as Aidan Baun went around the right corner for a 26-yard scoring run.
Vaughan Evans was good on his conversion pass to Dylan Duvall as the Braves owned a 30-0 lead with 6:44 left in the half.
The Little Bucs were forced to punt on their next drive as Bridgeport took over at the B-UMS 36-yard line.
Sparks capped of a six-play drive with a nine-yard run with 1:01 left in the half.
Evans connected on a pass to Mark Biafore on the conversion attempt as Bridgeport took a 38-0 lead.
It looked like that would be the score at the half, but the Little Bucs fumbled the ball away with 10 seconds remaining and Bridgeport scored on their first play when Sparks ran 39 yards around the left end for the touchdown with no time remaining in the half.
Liam Garcia brought down Rorhig on the conversion run, but the Braves took a 44-0 lead into the break.
Bridgeport scored twice in the second half, once in the third quarter on a seven-yard run by Evans and once in the fourth quarter on a one-yard run by Luke Hefner.
Bridgeport gained 349 yards of total offense, all on the ground.
Sparks led them with 186 yards on nine totes while Rorhig gained 86 yards on 10 carries.
The Little Bucs had their worst offensive game of the season in the setback.
They picked up just two first downs and 59 yards of total offense, all on the ground.
Garcia led the Little Bucs with 53 yards on 14 carries while Yardley had eight yards on three attempts.
The Little Bucs ended the year with a 7-2 record.
