Little Bucs down Mountaineer and Philippi, but fall to Central Preston

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School Little Bucs went 2-1 over a stretch of three games recently.

They defeated Mountaineer (Clarksburg) by a 43-26 score on the road and downed Philippi at home by a 41-32 score before falling to Central Preston by a 38-33 score.

The action left head coach Jason Westfall’s squad with a 6-9 record.

Against Mountaineer, the Little Bucs had little resistance in the win.

They took an early 9-2 lead after one quarter with Ian Strader putting in six points, Bryson Johnston added two points and Jonas Barton putting in a free throw.

The Little Bucs doubled up Mountaineer in the second quarter by a 16-8 margin and took a 25-10 lead in the break with them.

Strader and Johnston each tallied seven points while Barton put in two for the Little Bucs in the second quarter.

Mountaineer took the third quarter by an 8-6 margin with Jaden Westfall putting in four points and Luke Yardley two.

The Little Bucs still led by a 31-18 margin after three quarters of action.

Buckhannon-Upshur won the last quarter by a 12-8 score with Strader putting in five points, Landon Marple hitting a three-pointer, Westfall adding a basket and Nathaniel Ringer and Blake Ruynon each adding a free throw.

Strader led the Little Bucs with 18 points and 14 rebounds.

Mountaineer was paced by Jenson Dodd and Trenton Tucker who each had 10 points.

In their win over Philippi, the Little Bucs used a strong second half to overcome a halftime deficit.

The Little Bucs were down by a 7-5 score after one quarter with Strader and Johnston each scoring a basket and Barton putting in a free throw.

The action picked up in the second quarter, which went to Philippi by a 16-12 margin.

Jaden Westfall put in four points, Marple and Jerin Westfall each launched in a trey and Johnston added a basket for the Little Bucs in the second, but they still trailed at the break by a 23-17 score.

The Little Bucs owned the third quarter taking it by a 9-2 score.

Barton poured in six points while Strader added a basket and Johnston put in a free throw.

That gave the Little Bucs a 26-25 lead heading into the final quarter.

The Little Bucs kept the momentum going and won the fourth quarter by a 15-7 score.

Strader led the way with seven points while Barton tacked on four, Jaden Westfall three and Johnston one for the Little Bucs in the final stanza as they beat Philippi by nine.

Strader and Barton topped the Little Buc offense with 11 points and 10 rebounds apiece.

Kaden Humphreys had a game-high 15 points for Philippi.

A poor second quarter did in the Little Bucs in their setback to Central Preston.

The two teams battled to a 9-9 first quarter with Johnston uncorking a three-pointer and Strader, Marple and Ringer each adding a basket.

The Little Bucs managed just on basket in the second quarter, a jumper by Strader, as they fell behind at the half by a 16-11 score.

Central Preston won the third canto by a 13-11 score for a 29-22 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Jaden Westfall had seven of the 11 third-quarter points while Strader had the other four.

The Little Bucs won the final quarter by an 11-9 score but it wasn’t enough to overtake Central Preston for the win.

Yardley had four points in the final stanza while Runyon added three and Jaden Westfall and Strader two each.

Strader led the Little Bucs with 10 points and 13 rebounds.

Jared Haskiell had 10 points to lead Central Preston.

The Little Bucs will be back in action at Mountaineer (Morgantown) today at 7:30 p.m.
