BUCKHANNON — Fourteen years ago, under the leadership of Lion Rob Sylvester and along with member Vicki Walton, the Tennerton Lions Club put their generous idea of a Christmas skating party for local kids into action. The public-spirited idea benefits less fortunate children in the Tennerton and Washington District communities. The group sends five forms to each teacher at both Tennerton and Washington District Elementary schools, and upon return, the group purchases a gift for each child.
In addition to the gift, the Tennerton Lions Club reserves the rink at Skateland every December, where they enjoy providing free pizza and drinks for all the children that they are happy to help support. Santa also makes a festive appearance to see the children and hand out their gifts. The Lions members report that they thoroughly enjoy this part of the year and watching the children come to have a good time. Ann Slaughter stated, “It is so much fun watching the kids that have never skated, especially the little ones that get out there.”
The Lions gathered to wrap over 60 gifts last Tuesday evening at the Tennerton Methodist Church. The Lions will host this year’s skating party for the children on December 4. It is very important to the group that the children not feel set apart; to know that they are special and chosen to attend this fun night with Santa and friends. The Tennerton Lions are always in service to their community and supportive in giving back to the youth.
