Lindsey sentenced for larceny

BUCKHANNON — A Jane Lew woman was sentenced to 10 days in jail this week for stealing a wallet from the Upshur County Magistrate’s office last year. Laura Robin Lindsey, age 54, entered a guilty plea to petit larceny on January 7 and was permitted to self-report to Tygart Valley Regional Jail on Wednesday to begin serving her sentence.

According to court documents, Lindsey saw a wallet laying on a chair in the Magistrate’s waiting room, where a man had accidently left it behind. She picked it up and reportedly opened the wallet as she approached the office window, then turned around and walked out. The wallet was later found in the women’s bathroom trash can located on the second floor of the courthouse. The victim said there had been $300 inside that was missing when the wallet was recovered from the trash.

Magistrate Kay Hurst entered the criminal judgement order, which will release Lindsey from incarceration on January 18.  Lindsey was also assessed $195.25 court costs and fees that must be paid in full by July 16, 2020.
