Lilly, Hurst, Cutlip pace Buccaneers during 2018-2019 basketball season

Dawson Lilly led the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers in scoring during the 2018-19 season with 14.3 points per game. He also added 56 assists and 24 steals during the season. The Bucs ended the season with a 9-14 record.

TENNERTON – Senior guard Dawson Lilly paced the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers in scoring during the 2018-19 basketball campaign.

Lilly missed the first five games of the season with an injury, but still led the Bucs with 14.3 points per game in 18 outings.

He poured in 74 field goals, including 20 three-pointers, and was 89-for-121 at the free throw line.

Two other players reached double digits for the Bucs.

Sophomore guard Ryan Hurst tallied 12.0 points per game while junior center Brayden Cutlip averaged 11.9 points per game.

Cutlip also led the team in rebounding pulling down 7.5 caroms per game.

The Bucs of head coach Travis Foster compiled a 9-14 record.

“I think we did the best we could, considering we were very young and played one of the hardest schedules in the state,” noted Foster. “I think we learned how important the little things of the game are, as an example our record could easily go from nine to 12 or 13 wins if we understood the importance of a free throw, and that will be corrected. I am very pleased with the effort and commitment the team gave me. They had to battle through a lot of adversity on and off the court from day one and to say I’m pleased at how they fought to help change this program around. I am very proud to coach them.

The second-year coach improved his team’s win total from six to nine in year two with the Bucs.

“We are building a family atmosphere of pride with these boys, pushing them and showing them that hard work can and will pay off somewhere down the line,” said Foster. “We are a program that doesn’t give anything to anyone, you have to earn it, if you’re not willing to work hard to become as good as you can then this program really isn’t for you. Like I have said from day one, give us a little time to work hard, input the process of success and we will change the culture of Buckhannon-Upshur basketball. It’s happening now, we keep getting better and better every day, success is being earned.”
