Letter: Removing Confederate statues will not change the past

© 2017-The Record Delta

Dear Editor:

I have heard about the recent event of others attempting to tear down statues of confederate soldiers and generals. I believe that this is disrespecting the great people that helped shape our country. When a statute is torn down nothing changes, so what’s the point? We did not place these statues to remember slavery, we placed them to remember the people and events that shaped our nation. It is important to remember the parts of history that were not our best so we don’t make the same mistake again. I may only be 11, but I know my history and I hope that others learn and respect it.

Sincerely,
Madolyn Long
