Letter: Contribute funds for upgrading veteran’s wall in Rock Cave

© 2018-The Record Delta

Dear Editor:

Between 2000 and 2005, the Southern Upshur Business Association began the development of the All Veterans Memorial located at the Y intersection of Routes 4 and 20 at Rock Cave. SUBA received a permit from the West Virginia Department of Highways to develop this project. Development included a monument and flag poles, a bridge across the ravine for access, building a gazebo, electric connection for night lights, Blue Star Roadside Memorial, Civil War Trail information marker and a wall was built where veteran’s names (active, inactive or deceased information can be inscribed) Community events have been held at the memorial at no cost.

The memorial area is central to the Rock Cave community, which as a grocery store, convenience store, fire department, grade school, primary care medical and pharmacy, restaurant, lumber and hardware store, bank, cottage industries and the West Virginia Wildlife Center within a short driving distance. Because of the location, people from parts of Randolph, Webster, Lewis, Braxton and Upshur counties take advantage of these attractions.

SUBA takes care of the area maintenance and the local garden club maintains the flower beds. SUBA is now involved in a project to upgrade the wall of the veteran’s information. Time and weather have had a degrading effect and we are unable to accommodate requests for further veteran’s inscriptions. Working with Upshur Monuments for the most practical plan to replace the crumbling wall, a proposal has been submitted to SUBA members. The cost of the upgrade, as planned, is approximately $25,000. The community has been involved in fundraising and to date, almost $5,900 has been raised.

It is imperative that the money required be raised as soon as possible; not only because of increasing costs, but to accommodate the veterans waiting to their names added. We need your help! If you, your group, or organization would like to donate, please do so as soon as possible. Checks may be sent to SUBA, P.O. Box 115, Rock Cave, WV 26234 (memo Veterans Wall), or left at the Rock Cave IGA while visiting the area. You may call Glen (304-924-6446) for more information. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

Sincerely, Glen Hawkins, SUBA President
