Leota M. Squires, age 93, of Bridgeport and formerly of Buckhannon, died on Monday, June 14, 2021, at Stonerise Healthcare in Bridgeport. She was born on August 7, 1927, in Queens, WV, a daughter of the late George and Ocie Lanham Gooden. She was united in marriage on August 2, 1947, to Arden Gwenn Squires, who preceded her in death on March 14, 2010. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was also preceded in death by two sisters: Retha Carpenter and Janice Tenney, and two brothers: Robert and Marvin Gooden.
She is survived by one daughter, Cathy and husband Steve Phillips of Bridgeport; two grandchildren: Curtis Phillips of Fairmont and Cara Phillips of Bridgeport; one sister, Areta Wilfong of Buckhannon; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Leota grew up on a farm in Queens, WV and related many interesting stories of practical life in a rural community before electricity became available. She was a member of the Bridgeport United Methodist Church and a former member of the Chapel Hill United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir and was active in the fundraising to build the church. She and Gwenn enjoyed camping and traveling in their motorhome. She was an expert seamstress and quilter, and enjoyed hosting visitors at their camp on the Buckhannon River. Retired from West Virginia Wesleyan College, she was an honorary member of the college Emeritus Club.
Friends will be received at the Heavner and Cutright Funeral Chapel on Friday, June 18, 2021, from 10-11:00 a.m., the funeral hour with Dr. Dan Kimble and Rev. James Lang officiating. Interment will follow in the Heavner Cemetery.
