Leonard James Zoeffel, age 85, of Ocala, Florida, went home to be with his Lord on November 27, 2020, peacefully with his wife by his side under the care of hospice at the Legacy House, Ocala, Florida.
He was born July 5, 1935, in Pickens, WV, a son of the late William Leonard Zoeffel and Cecilia Marie Wuchner Zoeffel. On May 30, 1986, he was united in marriage to Kathleen Sue Woody, who survives him. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Marie Zoeffel Page.
He is survived by two children, William Leon Zoeffel and Sandy Zoeffel Howze, both of Atlanta, Georgia; three stepchildren: Debra Woody Sampley and husband Ronald, Robert Sellers and wife Darlene, and James Sellers, Jr., all of Buckhannon, WV. He is also survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Leonard graduated at Pickens High School then worked at the steel mill in Canton, Ohio until he entered the U.S. Air Force on May 14, 1958, where he served as an Avionics Instrument Systems Technician for 23 years. He retired from the U.S. Air Force on May 31, 1981 after being awarded AF Outstanding Unit Award, Good Conduct Medal, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, Expeditionary Medal, Longevity Service Award, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Campaign Medal, and Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Medal.
Per Leonard’s request, his body was cremated, and a memorial service will be held at a later date. Neptune Society of Ocala, Florida is in charge of the arrangements and interment will be held at the Bushnell National Cemetery, Bushnell, Florida. Another good soldier died today.
