Lady ’Cats tumble to Shepherd

SHEPHERDSTOWN —  Only one player reached in double figures as the cold-shooting West Virginia Wesleyan women’s basketball team dropped a 65-47 verdict to Shepherd Wednesday night in Mountain East Conference action.

The Lady Bobcats, who connected on just 21.7 percent of their field-goal attempts (15-of-69) and were 1-of-16 from beyond the arc, fell to 5-12 overall and 3-8 in MEC games. They have dropped six straight games.

Wesleyan led 2-0 on a layup by Stacy Remer to start the game before the Rams built a 16-9 advantage after one quarter.

The Lady Bobcats eventually regained a one-point lead, at 17-16, on a Remer jumper with 6:31 left in the second quarter.

Wesleyan would not lead again, however, as Shepherd went on a 10-2 run en route to taking a 26-23 advantage into the intermission.

The Lady Bobcats got within two points twice in the third quarter — the final time coming on a layup by Victoria Jackson with 5:51 left that made it 31-29 — before the Rams reeled off eight straight points to construct a 10-point edge, at 39-29, after Kayla Tibbs’ 3-pointer with 3:22 left in the third quarter.

The Shepherd advantage was 52-36 entering the final frame and Wesleyan came no closer than 14 points the remainder of the game.
