Lady ‘Cats suffer first loss of the year to Mercyhurst, 20-3, in non-conference lax action

BUCKHANNON – The West Virginia Wesleyan lacrosse team’s perfect start to the season came to an end with a 20-3 loss to Mercyhurst in their home opener here Sunday afternoon.

The Lady ‘Cats entered the game with a 3-0 record and outscored their first three opponents by a 51-19 score but couldn’t get their offense going against Mercyhurst.

Madison Duvall had the lone score for the Lady ‘Cats in the first half at the 21:44 mark on an unassisted goal.

That left Wesleyan down by a 3-1 score, but Mercyhurst scored the final eight goals of the half for an 11-1 intermission lead.

Mercyhurst scored the first five goals of the second half for a 16-1 lead before Madeline Gorzka found the back of the net with 8:20 left in the game.

Duvall had the assist on the goal.

Mercyhurst pushed their lead to 20-2 before Duvall ended the game with an unassisted goal.

Wesleyan was outshot by a 40-9 margin.

The Lady ‘Cats used three keepers in the game with Gabrielle Cleaveland getting the start and making 14 stops while Samantha Mise made one.

Wesleyan, now 3-1 on the season, will return to action Friday when they visit North Canton (Ohio) for a non-conference game with Walsh at 1 p.m.
