Lady ‘Cats split with Shepherd, tumble twice to Fairmont State

Brooke Clark (3) of the West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats slides into second base safely with a double during the second inning of game one of a doubleheader with Fairmont State Sunday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference contest. Clark had two hits and scored a run but the Lady ‘Cats lost game one, 9-2.

BUCKHANNON – The West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcat softball team went 1-3 over the weekend in a pair of Mountain East Conference home doubleheaders with Shepherd and Fairmont State.

The Lady ‘Cats split their two games with Shepherd on Saturday, winning game one, 2-1, but falling in the nightcap, 3-1.

On Sunday, Wesleyan dropped both games to Fairmont State by a 9-2 and 2-1 scores.

The four games left head coach Steve Warner and his Lady Bobcats with a 6-10 overall record and a 1-3 mark in the MEC.

In Saturday’s opener, Wesleyan overcame four errors for the 2-1 win.

Wesleyan struck first in the bottom of the first when Kiley Turner singled back up the middle to score Kennedy Cowart.

The Lady ‘Cats upped their lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the third when Megan Magsamen singled home Lauryn King.

Shepherd’s lone run came in the top of the fourth when Ashley Burger singled home Connor Gilligan for an unearned run.

Shepherd threatened in the top of the seventh getting a runner on by error with two outs, but Wesleyan starter Hannah Hudson forced Rachel Taylor to line out to second base for the final out.

Wesleyan collected six hits with Magsamen leading the charge with two.

Hudson improved her record to 3-2 in the complete-game victory. She didn’t allow an earned run on five hits while walking two and striking out three.

In the nightcap, Shepherd’s Taylor Stocks had a no-hitter going into the bottom of the seventh inning.

With Shepherd up 3-0, Wesleyan’s Kiley Turner ended the no-hit bid and the shutout with a two-out home run.

It was the only hit Wesleyan recorded in their 3-1 setback.

Haylee Shires suffered the setback in the circle for Wesleyan as she went the distance giving up two earned runs on nine hits while walking two.

In Sunday’s opener with Fairmont State, the Lady ‘Cats made five errors which led to four of the nine Lady Falcons’ runs being unearned.

Wesleyan opened up a 2-0 lead after three innings of play on a Lauren Niglio RBI single in the bottom of the second and Destiny Alvarado scoring on an error in the bottom of the third.

It was all Fairmont State after that.

They tied the game in the fourth after a two-run home run by Kadi Cosgrove and then took the lead in the top of the fifth with an unearned run.

Fairmont State tacked on three more in the sixth to go up by a 6-2 score.

A Heide Hormell three-run blast by the Lady Falcons in the top of the seventh wrapped up the scoring.

Wesleyan powered out 11 hits in the loss with Turner, Brooke Clark and Miglio each getting two apiece.

Shires saw her record drop to 2-5 as she went 5 2/3 innings in the circle and allowed three earned runs on nine hits while walking one and striking out one.

In Sunday’s finale, the teams combined for just eight hits as both teams collected four.

Wesleyan staked themselves to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a Turner solo home run.

Fairmont State tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third when Jenny Stubbs singled home Olivia Dunn.

Stubbs hit the game-winner in the top of the sixth inning with a solo home run.

Clark, Celia Valencia, Turner and Alvarado each had a hit for Wesleyan.

Hudson suffered the loss in a complete-game effort.

She gave up two earned runs on four hits and struck out two.

Wesleyan was slated to play Alderson-Broaddus at home in a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon.

They will return to action on the road Saturday at Athens as they face Concord in a conference doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
