Lady ‘Cats shoot 31 percent in 78-51 loss to Concord


ATHENS – A 10-day break in the schedule seemed to cool of the West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats after they dropped a 78-51 road decision to the Concord Mt. Lions Saturday afternoon in Mountain East Conference action.

The Lady’ Cats had won two of their last three games but was never able to get their offense on track against Concord.

The Lady ‘Cats shot just 30.9 percent from the floor and just 22.7 percent from the three-point arc.

Nobody for Wesleyan managed to score double digits either.

The game started off poorly for the Lady ‘Cats as they found themselves down by an 8-0 score after just two minutes of action.

Summer Matlack finally put Wesleyan on the scoreboard with a pair of free throws at the 7:31 mark.

A 3-pointer by Mykenzie Martin brought Wesleyan to within four, at 14-10, but Concord scored the final 

Five points of the half for a 19-10 lead.

Wesleyan couldn’t get any closer than five points in the second half as Concord opened up a 19-point lead on two different occasions, including at the break as they were up by a 41-22 score.

Concord raced out to a 26-point lead, at 57-31, with 2:30 left in the third quarter, but Alex Szelong scored a lay-up and Tyra Hughes uncorked a trey to close the gap to 21 heading into the final quarter at 57-36.

Concord’s biggest lead of the fourth quarter was 27 at the end of the game.

Stawovy and Szelong each scored eight points to lead the Bobcat offense while Tyra Hughes collected seven.

Riley Fitzwater paced Concord with 21 points while Madison May had a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds.

Concord improved to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in the MEC.

Wesleyan fell to 2-6 overall and 2-4 in the MEC.

The Lady Bobcats will be idle for three weeks as they return to action Thursday, Jan. 10 when they visit Urbana in a conference contest.

The game will tip at 5:30 p.m.
