CLERMONT, Fla. – West Virginia Wesleyan’s Lady Bobcats got the softball season off to a winning start here Saturday morning, dealing the Mercyhurst (Pa.) Lady Lakers a 3-1 defeat in the opening game of their Spring Break schedule.

But they dropped a 9-6 decision to the Concordia-St. Paul (Minn.) Lady Golden Bears Saturday afternoon and fell in two games Sunday to see their record drop to 1-3. They lost to the Wayne State (Neb.) Lady Wildcats by a 4-2 count and to the Saint Rose (N. Y.) Lady Golden Knights, 7-2.

Hanna Vet twirled a four-hitter, not issuing a walk and striking out two in the opener with Mercyhurst.

Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Madison Casto lined a lead-off single to center field, stole second, moved to third on Morgan Bruce’s ground-out and dashed home on a wild pitch.

The Lady Lakers evened the count in the top of the fifth on Lindsey Perese’s double to center field and Jamie Ward’s single to center.

The Lady Bobcats regained the lead in the home half of the fifth, with Megan Magsamen belting a double to center, going to third on Casto’s sacrifice and crossing when Sara Scoone reached on an error.

They completed the scoring with one in the sixth. Lauryn King led off with a single to center, raced to third on Krista Waggoner’s single to right field and scooted home on Kasey Cowart’s sacrifice bunt.

Casto had two of Wesleyan’s five hits.

The Lady ‘Cats jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening inning against Concordia–St. Paul, taking advantage of three miscues  and two walks and receiving singles from Casto, Bruce and Waggoner.
