Lady 'Cats ice cold in 78-60 setback to Shippensburg

Abi Gabauer of the West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats scores 11 points and grabbed four rebounds in their 78-60 road loss on Sunday to Shippensburg.

SHIPPENSBURG (Pa.) – The West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcat offense was never able to get on track in their non-conference meeting with Shippensburg Sunday afternoon in a 78-60 setback.

The Lady ‘Cats shot just 34.7 percent from the floor and 24.0 percent from the three-point stripe as they dropped to 0-4 on the season.

Despite the cold shooting it was the Lady Bobcat defense that put them in an early hole in the first-quarter.

Shippensburg put up 24 points, shooting seven for 12 (58 percent), in the first quarter as the raced out to a 24-16 lead.

Shippensburg built their lead to 14, at 38-24, with 2:54 left in the half, but Wesleyan closed on a 7-2 run.

Abi Gabauer made a jumper, Tyra Hughes scored on a fast break lay-up, and after a lay-up by Shippensburg’s Ariel Jones, Hughes uncorked a trey to close out the half, leaving Wesleyan down by nine, at 40-31.

Gabauer knocked down a jumper to start the third quarter and make it a 40-33 contest, but Shippensburg controlled the rest of the quarter.

They went on a 23-8 run for a 22-point lead at 63-41 before Hughes ended the quarter with a 3-pointer to make it a 63-44 contest heading into the final quarter.

A trey by Margarita Kilpatrick gave Shippensburg their biggest lead at 28, at 77-49, with 5:31 left in the game.

With both teams emptying their benches in the final five minutes, Wesleyan closed the game on an 11-1 run to make the final score look more respectable.

Jones led Shippensburg in scoring with 26 points while Aunbrielle Green had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Lauren Mills added 14 points and Kryshell Gordy chipped in 10.

Shippensburg was good on 27 of their 53 field goal attempts for a 50.9 shooting percentage.

Hughes led the Wesleyan offense with 19 points while Gabauer had 11 and Alexa Szelong 10.

Anastasiya Karaivanova, playing in her first game of the year, grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with five points.

Shippensburg improved their record to 2-2.

Wesleyan will return to the court today as they visit Shepherdstown for a 5:30 p.m. league outing with the Shepherd Rams.
