Lady ‘Cats fall to West Liberty, 86-63

Nicole Gilyard (15) of the West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats recorded a double-double against West Liberty with 21 points and 11 rebounds during their MEC contest Monday. The Lady ‘Cats dropped an 86-63 decision.

BUCKHANNON – The West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats had no answers for West Liberty’s 6-3 senior forward Marissa Brown in an 86-63 Mountain East Conference setback Monday evening at Rockefeller Center.

Brown had a double-double scoring 32 points, grabbing 19 rebounds and blocked nine shots in the West Liberty victory.

It was a tough evening for the Lady Bobcats as they never led in the contest.

They fell behind early by a 14-4 score midway through the first quarter and were playing catch-up the rest of the night.

West Liberty led by 10 at the end of the first quarter by a 24-14 score.

West Liberty built a 13-point lead with four minutes gone in the second quarter, at 30-17, but Wesleyan played their best ball of the night the final six minutes of the half.

A pair of jumpers by Nicole Gilyard and Carrie Bennett trimmed the deficit to 30-21 for Wesleyan, and after a basket by West Liberty, Abi Gabauer knocked down a jumper, Gilyard sank two free throws and Cydney Lapczynski closed the half with a 10-footer to cap a 6-0 Lady Bobcat run that brought them to within six at the break, at 33-27.

In a high-scoring third quarter that saw the two teams combine for 46 points, Wesleyan hung right with the Hilltoppers.

A lay-up by Gilyard closed the gap to two points, at 35-33 with 7:32 left in the third quarter.

West Liberty pushed their lead up to nine, at 46-37, but Wesleyan closed it to eight at the end of the third down 57-49.

The fourth quarter though belonged to West Liberty as they outscored Wesleyan by a 29-14 margin.

West Liberty opened the quarter on a 15-4 run for a 72-53 lead.

A mini 4-0 run by Wesleyan after baskets by Gilyard and Victoria Jackson brought the deficit down to 15, at 72-57, with 5:33 remaining in the game.

A Corin Todd jumper closed the gap to 14 for Wesleyan, at 77-63, with three minutes left but Wesleyan couldn’t get any closer the rest of the way.

Gilyard led the Wesleyan offense with a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds.

Brittany Stawovy added nine points and Jackson tacked on eight.

West Liberty improved their record at 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the league.

Wesleyan dropped to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

The Lady Bobcats will return to action this Sunday as they visit Shippensburg for a non-conference game starting  at 2 p.m.
