Lady ‘Cats enter MEC Tournament as 10th seed

BUCKHANNON – Despite losing 10 of their final 12 games, the West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats hung on to make the Mountain East Conference Tournament after the league announced the seedings and pairings for the tournament following the conclusion of the games held on Saturday.

The top 10 teams qualify for the tournament at Wheeling’s WesBanco Arena, with the top six seeds earning byes. Glenville State claimed the regular season title and is the top seed for this year's tournament for the third-straight year.

The Lady Pioneers are seeking their third MEC Tournament title and second in as many years.

Charleston is the No. 2 seed, while Concord won the tiebreaker to take the No. 3 seed over West Liberty. Notre Dame (5th) and UVa-Wise (6th) took the remaining first round byes.

Fairmont State is seeded seventh while Shepherd is eighth, W.Va. State ninth with Wesleyan rounding out the field at No. 10.

The Lady ‘Cats will battle Fairmont State in a battle of the seven and 10 seeds Wednesday in the tournament opener at noon.

Wesleyan and Fairmont State split their season series as Wesleyan won their initial battle in Buckhannon on Dec. 1, 63-61, but lost the return engagement in Fairmont last Wednesday, 78-69.

The Lady ‘Cats of head coach Vicky Bullett will enter the tournament led by junior forward Nicole Gilyard and her team-leading 9.8 points per game and 7.2 rebounds per game.

Wesleyan will also look to sophomore forward Abi Gabauer and her 8.6 points per game and senior guard Alexa Szelong’s 8.3 points per game.

Senior guard Tyra Hughes leads the team in assists with 88 and in steals with 47.

The winner of the Wesleyan-Fairmont State game will face No. 2 seed Charleston Thursday at noon.
