URBANA, Ohio – West  Virginia Wesleyan’s 12th-ranked Lady Bobcats were upset by the homestanding Notre Dame (Ohio) Lady Falcons in a  Mountain East Conference doubleheader Saturday, but bounced back here Sunday to knock off the Urbana (Ohio) Lady Blue Knights in another league twin bill.
The Lady ‘Cats were shocked by Notre Dame, 4-1 and 7-5.
They downed Urbana by a 3-1 count in the opener, and completed the sweep with a five-inning 11-0 decision.
The weekend action left the Lady Bobcats with an all-games record of 23-5 and a conference ledger of 11-3 heading into MEC home doublets with Charleston’s Lady Golden Eagles Saturday and West Virginia State’s Lady Yellow Jackets Sunday.
In the opener at Notre Dame, the Lady ‘Cats broke a scoreless deadlock with their run in the top of the sixth inning. Sara Scoone rapped a single to left field and Marilyn Maas went in to run for her. Maas moved to second on Morgan Bruce’s sacrifice bunt, and scored on Jessica Rodriguez’s double to center.
The Lady Falcons did their scoring in the bottom of the sixth on an error, a double by Shelby Stephens, run-scoring singles by Erin Calhoun and Perris Stevens, and a run-scoring fielder’s choice grounder by Maria Vanadia.
Rodriguez collected two of Wesleyan’s six hits.
Hannah Vet suffered the loss, dropping her to 10-1, she gave up six hits, didn’t issue a walk, and struck out eight.
Wesleyan drew first blood in the second clash with a three-run spurt in the top of the second stanza. After Bruce blasted a lead-off home run to left field, Olivia Gore singled to left field, Brooklyn Waddell lined a single to left field, and both advanced on the throw, and Taylor Barnett drove them home with a single down the left field line.
Notre Dame tallied one in the home half of the frame, with Halli Swiger banging a single to center and sprinting home on a double down the left field line by Shelby Stevens.
The Lady Falcons went on a six-run spree in the third, using singles by Sarah Depp, Nicole Luciano, Calhoun and Amy Hoover, doubles by Stevens and Stephens, and Swiger’s two-run round-tripper.
The Lady ‘Cats rallied for two runs in the sixth, but it was too little and too late. Bruce reached on an error, Gore belted a run-scoring two-bagger to right-center field, and Brittani Bible drove a single to right to plate Gore.
Sayaka Foley started in the circle and took the loss, with Alyssa Shawgo and Kayla Marburger throwing in relief.
Wesleyan cracked out nine hits, with Gore rapping two.
Vet won both games against Urbana, tossing a three-hitter in the opener and a one-hitter in game two to up her ledger to 12-1.
Bruce hammered a home run to center field, her sixth of the year, to give the Lady ‘Cats the lead in the top of the fourth in the first contest with Urbana.
The Lady Blue Knights responded to tie it up in the bottom of the inning when Riley Curtis singled, advanced on a ground-out, and dashed across on Caitlyn Stoner’s double to right field.
The Lady Bobcats made it 2-1 in the fifth, with Krista Waggoner singling, Bible walking, Tori Pogue beating out an infield single to load the sacks, and Gore walking to force in the run.
They finished it off with an insurance marker in the sixth. Bruce drew a walk and Maas ran for her. Maas took second on Rodriguez’s sacrifice bunt and sped in on Waggoner’s double to left-center field.
The Lady ‘Cats collected seven hits, with Pogue belting out three and Waggoner adding two.
Vet didn’t walk a batter and fanned four.
Wesleyan grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first canto of the second contest when Pogue banged a lead-off single up the middle and Bruce followed with her seventh circuit blast of the season.
The Lady Bobcats plated one in the second, with Pogue walking, moving up on an error, and scoring on another miscue.
They chased two across in the third, using singles by Rodriguez, Waddell and Waggoner, and Bible’s sacrifice bunt.
They upped the spread to 9-0 with a four-run burst in the fourth. Pogue racked a double down the left field line and scored when Gore reached on an outfield bobble. Scoone singled, Bruce was intentionally walked to load the bases, and after Rodriguez grounded into a double play, Waddell walked to again fill the sacks. Waggoner then drilled a two-bagger to right field to plate three runs.
The Lady ‘Cats wrapped it up with a pair in the fifth. Barnett singled, Pogue beat out a bunt single, and Gore and Scoone drew back-to-back passes to force a run home. Bruce hit into a double play, but Rodriguez walked, and Waddell followed with a single through the left side to score the final marker.
Pogue led Wesleyan’s 11-hit barrage with a three-for-three game, with Waddell and Waggoner each banging out two.
Vet gave up the lone hit in the fourth, a one-out single by Curtis. She didn’t give up a walk, and whiffed one.
