Lady ‘Cats come up short against Fairmont State


FAIRMONT – It was a game of streaks between the West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats and the Fairmont State Falcons here Wednesday evening in a Mountain East Conference game at Joe Retton Arena.

The Lady Bobcats lost a 78-69 decision.

Fairmont State raced out to a 16-7 lead but Wesleyan scored 10 straight for a 17-16 lead with 45 seconds left in the opening quarter.

Sierra Kotchman nailed a trey for the Lady Falcons as they went into the second quarter with a 19-17 lead.

With Wesleyan down by one, at 25-24, Fairmont State went on a 12-0 run for a 37-25 advantage with 3:45 remaining in the half.

Fairmont State led at the break, at 42-32.

It was Wesleyan’s turn for a run coming out of the halftime as they went on a 17-7 run to deadlock the game at 49-49, with 3:08 left in the third quarter.

With the game tied at 52-52, Kotchman again drained a trey at the buzzer to give the Lady Falcons a 55-52 lead.

Fairmont State then turned the tables on Wesleyan with an 8-1 run for a 63-53 advantage with 7:19 remaining.

Wesleyan closed it to five with on an Abi Gabauer 3-pointer with a minute left, at 74-69, but Fairmont closed out the game at the free-throw line for their nine-point win.

Gabauer and Brittany Stawovy each had 12 points for Wesleyan.

Kotchman led Fairmont State with 18 while Rachel Laskody had 16.

Fairmont State improved to 12-15 overall and 9-12 in the conference.

The loss dropped the Lady Bobcats to 6-18 overall and 6-15 in the MEC.

They will wrap up their regular season Saturday with a road conference game against Glenville State at 2 p.m.
