Lady ’Cats, Charleston remain tied for MEC lead after DH split

Both squads now sport 13-3 league marks

BUCKHANNON – With Sayaka Foley firing a classy four-hitter, West Virginia Wesleyan’s Lady Bobcats blanked the arch-rival Charleston Lady Golden Eagles by a 5-0 count in the second game here Monday to earn a split in their Mountain East Conference doubleheader.
The Lady ‘Cats dropped the opener by a 3-1 margin.
The two teams entered the day tied for the conference lead with 13-3 records. They closed out the day still tied, at 14-4.
The Lady Bobcats broke a scoreless tie in game one, plating their run in the fourth inning. Morgan Bruce walked and after Brooklyn Waddell singled to left field, Marilyn Maas went in to run for Bruce. Jessica Rodriguez racked a double to send Maas home.
Charleston tied it in the fifth when Shelby Ume was hit by a pitch, moved up on Alyssa Stanley’s single to left field, and dashed home on Hannah Kowach’s double.
The Lady Golden Eagles put the game away with two in the sixth. Rachelle Toppings reached on a bobble, went to second on Natalie Beck’s sacrifice bunt, and scored on Monica Carter’s double. Laura Ashlock followed with a single to chase Carter home.
Bruce had two of Wesleyan’s five hits.
Hannah Vet suffered the loss, dropping her record to 13-2. She scattered eight hits, didn’t issue a walk and struck out four. Only one of the runs off her was earned.
Foley was in command all the way in the second game. She didn’t walk a batter and fanned six in boosting her record to 9-3.
The Lady Bobcats gave her all the cushion she needed with a solo marker in the first stanza when Olivia Gore singled to left field, moved to second on Sara Scoone’s single to center, went to third on a bobble, and coasted home on Waddell’s single to left.
They added two in the third for a 3-0 lead. Gore led off with a double to right field, moved around to third on walks to Scoone and Bruce, and crossed when Waddell reached on an error. Rodriguez drove the second marker in with a single.
The Lady ‘Cats capped it off with two in the sixth. Taylor Barnett doubled to left field, Tori Pogue reached on an error, and Gore was safe on another miscue, allowing Barnett to score. In a double steal play, Gore was caught at second, but Pogue swiped home with the final tally.
Scone led Wesleyan’s 10-hit attack with three, with Gore and Waddell getting two apiece.
The Lady ‘Cats saw their overall record go to 26-6. They will entertain West Liberty’s Lady Hilltoppers in a conference twin bill today and remain home to battle Salem International’s Lady Tigers in a non-conference doublet Saturday.
