Lady ‘Cat cagers rally from 13 down in second half to record 67-64 victory over Shippensburg


BUCKHANNON – Brittany Stawovy scored 19 points and Nicole Gilyard added a double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds as the West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats returned to the win column with a 67-64 victory over Shippensburg in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at Rockefeller Center.

The Lady ‘Cats had to overcome a slow start for the win as they trailed by six after one-quarter of action, at 20-14, and had to overcome a 13-point deficit in the third quarter.

In the first quarter, Shippensburg raced out to an 8-0 lead before Courtney Wilfong put Wesleyan on the board with a lay-up with 2:45 ticked off the first-quarter clock.

Shippensburg pushed their lead out to nine, at 20-11, but a three-pointer by Stawovy made it a 20-14 game at the end of the first quarter.

Shippensburg scored the first four points of the second quarter for a 24-14 lead, but Stawovy canned another trey to bring Wesleyan to within seven, at 24-17, with 7:33 showing on the second-quarter clock.

Wilfong added two free throws two minutes later to trim the Shippensburg lead to five at 24-19.

Down 26-21, Gilyard knocked down a jumper and Abi Gabauer uncorked a three-pointer to even the contest for Wesleyan, at 26-26, with 3:27 left in the half.

Shippensburg scored the final six points of the half for a 32-26 lead at the intermission.

Shippensburg scored the first seven points of the third quarter extending their lead to 13, at 39-26.

Gilyard ended the run with a lay-up and Anastasia Karaivanova put in a lay-up to bring Wesleyan back to a single-point deficit, at 39-30, with 5:47 left in the quarter.

Wesleyan went on a 10-3 run capped by another Stawovy three-pointer as they closed the gap to 42-40, with 2:19 remaining in the third quarter.

Ariel Jones hit two free throws to wrap up the quarter giving Shippensburg a 44-40 lead heading into the final 10 minutes of action.

With Shippensburg up by six, at 48-42, Gilyard hit a free throw, Wilfong went inside for a lay-up and then fired in a trey to even the game at 48-48 with 7:17 remaining.

Jones hit another free throw to put Shippensburg back up at 49-48, but Gilyard knocked down a jumper giving the lead back to Wesleyan, at 50-49, with 5:31 remaining.

Wesleyan held onto that lead the rest of the way.

A lay-up by Wilfong put Wesleyan up by five, at 57-52, with 3:19 left in the contest.

A pair of three throws by Aunbrielle Green made it a 63-61 game with 41 seconds left, but Wilfong made three of four free throws on Wesleyan’s next two possessions to give the Lady ‘Cats a 66-61 lead and Cydney Lapczynski made a free throw to up the advantage to 67-61.

Destiny Jefferson hit a trey for Shippensburg at the end of the game.

Wilfong also scored in double digits for Wesleyan with 16 points while Gabauer added eight.

Wesleyan shot 40.6 percent from the floor hitting on 26 of their 64 field goal attempts.

They were eight of 22 from behind the three-point stripe.

Shippensburg was led by Jones who scored 17 points and Jefferson who tallied 16.

Shippensburg shot the ball at a 35.4 percent clip making good on 23 of their 65 attempts.

The setback was the first of the season for Shippensburg dropping them to 2-1 on the season.

Wesleyan improved to 2-1 overall.

They will return to the court Wednesday when they visit Pitt-Johnstown for a non-conference clash at 6:30 p.m.
