TENNERTON – In the span of 18 hours, the Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs ended a two-game losing streak, started a two-game winning streak and won their own Buckhannon-Upshur Holiday Classic Tournament this past Friday and Saturday.

On Friday evening, the Lady Bucs led from start to finish in a dominating opening tournament win over the Brooke Bruins by a 72-36 score.

Then Saturday afternoon, the Lady Bucs won the tournament title with a 53-41 victory over the Spring Valley Timberwolves.

The pair of wins left head coach Rob Kittle and his Lady Bucs with a 5-4 record.

Friday’s result was never in doubt as the Lady Bucs raced out to a 9-0 lead behind a pair of lay-ups from Shelby McDaniels and Alli Robinson, a 3-pointer from Brooklyn Maxwell and a pair of free throws from Audrey Gaudet.

“We had a lot of energy and emotion at the start of the game,” remarked Kittle. “We hadn’t liked how the last two games went for us so we wanted to change that and set the tone early and we did a good job of starting hot.”

Brooke made consecutive baskets, but B-U went on a 10-2 run after that for a 19-6 lead.

Brook made the final basket of the first quarter as the Lady Bucs led after one quarter, at 19-8.

B-U scored the first 10 points of the second quarter as Robinson hit a pair of treys and a lay-up and Leigh Ann Bennett put in a lay-up during the run as the Lady Bucs extended their lead to 29-8.

With the Lady Bucs up 35-12, Bennett darted inside for a lay-up and Maxwell uncorked a trey as B-U took a 40-12 advantage with two minutes left in the half.

They went into the intermission up by a 42-17 count.

Leading 46-23, Robinson made back-to-back baskets as B-U pushed their lead to 50-23 with five minutes left in the third quarter.

A Robinson jumper extended the B-U lead to 31, at 56-25, with 2:49 remaining in the third quarter.

Brooke went on an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to 56-33, but Sydney Fletcher ended the Bruin run with a free throw at the end of the period.

Buckhannon-Upshur went into the final period up 57-33.

B-U scored the first 11 points of the fourth quarter for a 68-33 advantage.

During the run, McDaniels scored five points while Kassidy Wilfong, Maxwell and Fletcher each had a basket.

Brooke’s lone basket in the final quarter came at the 2:25 mark when Chloe Fox nailed a trey.

The Lady Bucs closed the game on a 4-0 run.

Robinson tallied a double-double for the Lady Bucs with 20 points and 10 rebounds.

McDaniels scored 13 points while Bennett and Maxwell each had 10.

Buckhannon-Upshur’s pressure defense forced Brooke to turn the ball over 26 times in the first half and 34 for the game.

The Lady Bucs managed 25 steals in the game with Robinson leading the way with seven.

Brooke, who shot just 33.3 percent for the game, was led by Hope Bowman’s nine points and Natalie Ryan’s and Chrissy Byers’ eight points.

Saturday afternoon’s contest between B-U and Spring Valley wasn’t a thing of beauty for either team, but the Lady Bucs prevailed despite a slow start to the game.

Both teams struggled offensively in the first quarter as the game was tied at 8-8 after eight minutes of action.

Robinson nailed a trey and a jumper in the paint, Gaudet scored on a lay-up and Maxwell sank a free throw for the first quarter Lady Buc scoring.

Things picked up in the second quarter for Buckhannon-Upshur as they held Spring Valley without a basket for over six minutes as they went on a 16-0 run.

Spring Valley scored the first two points of the quarter, but Maxwell knocked down two free throws and a lay-up, McDaniels darted inside for a lay-up, Bennett fired in a 3-pointer, Gaudet scored on a lay-up and McDaniels and Gaudet each scored on a free throw as the Lady Bucs opened up a 24-10 lead.

Spring Valley, however, scored the final six points of the half to cut the lead to 26-16.

Spring Valley kept that momentum going to start the third quarter as they scored eight straight to make it a 26-24 contest.

The Lady Bucs never panicked and came right back with six straight points as Maxwell, McDaniels and Gaudet each had baskets as B-U pushed their lead back to eight, at 32-24, with 4:26 left in the third quarter.

Following a Spring Valley basket, the Lady Bucs went on a 6-0 jaunt to take the lead back to 11, at 37-26.

The Lady Bucs led by nine, 40-31, going into the final quarter.

Spring Valley closed the gap to six, at 47-41, with 3:21 left but the Lady Bucs closed the game on a 6-0 run behind two free throws by Gaudet and four points from McDaniels.

Gaudet scored a game-high 15 points to lead the Lady Bucs while Robinson had another double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds.

McDaniels added 12 points and five rebounds while Maxwell chipped in nine points and 10 rebounds.

Hayley McComas led Spring Valley with 13 points.

“I am proud of the girls and how they competed the whole weekend,” Kittle stated. “The victory over Spring Valley wasn’t very pretty, but we grinded it out and found a way to win. Even when Spring Valley cut it to two points, it showed that we have the heart to keep playing. They put it into another gear after the Spring Valley run and found a way to win. They have been there before and seen it all. They know there will be ups and downs of a game. They just have to play through it and find a way to win. I am very proud of them for that.”

The Lady Bucs will return to action Friday when they host Grafton at 7:30 p.m.
