Lady Bucs use strong defensive effort to get past Philip Barbour, 58-35

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs used their pressure defense once again to turn a team over and record a victory Thursday night.

This time the victim was the Philip Barbour Lady Colts in a Big 10 Conference contest at the high school.

The Lady Bucs forced Philip Barbour into 20 first-half turnovers and 32 for the game en route to a convincing 58-35 victory.

“We were flying around to the ball and getting a lot of deflections,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Rob Kittle. “We were doing a great job of communicating on defense. We were able to hold them to six points in the first quarter and just eight in the second quarter. I was extremely proud of our defensive effort tonight.”

McKenzie Reynolds sparked the Lady Bucs in the first half nearly acquiring a double-double as she had 16 points and nine rebounds at the break. She finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds.

“Reynolds did a great job running the floor,” stated Kittle. “She got a lot of rebounds out top. She just had an all-around great game. I am very proud of her.”

The Lady Bucs zoomed out to a 6-0 lead behind a lay-up by Shelby McDaniels and a put back and a lay-up by Reynolds.

They held that six point lead at the end of the first quarter, at 12-6.

A three-pointer by Marissa Schiefelbein made it a 14-9 contest but the Lady Colts would never get any closer.

The Lady Bucs answered with a 9-2 run capped off by a Reynolds put back making it a 23-11 score with 3:23 left in the half.

The Lady Bucs extended their lead to 15 at the break, at 29-14.

Buckhannon-Upshur scored the first six points of the second half as McDaniels scored on a lay-up, Reynolds put in a free throw and Kennedy Samargo unleashed a three-pointer to increase the Lady Buc lead to 21, at 35-14.

With the Lady Bucs leading 37-18, McDaniels put in two free throws and Samargo turned in an old-fashioned three-point play to up the B-U advantage to 24, at 42-18

Leading by a 44-21 score, Brooklyn Maxwell scored a lay-up and Kassidy Wilfong put in a short baseline jumper to give the Lady Bucs a 48-21 lead at the break.

A lay-up by McDaniels gave the Lady Bucs their biggest lead of the game, 30 points, at 53-23, with 6:21 left in the contest.

Kittle went to his bench the rest of the way as Buckhannon-Upshur would win by 23.

“We were extremely happy that we were able to put Philip Barbour away early,” concluded Kittle. “We talked about not having a letdown after our tough loss on Tuesday to University. That fact that we came out tonight and played with energy made me very proud.”

Following Reynolds in the scoring column for the Lady Bucs were McDaniels with 16 points and Samargo with eight.

Emily Denison led the Lady Colts with 10 points.

Philip Barbour dropped to 6-10 overall and 2-6 in the Big 10 Conference.

The Lady Bucs improved to 10-6 overall and 8-3 in the Big 10 Conference.

The Lady Bucs will return to action Tuesday when they host Bridgeport at 7:30 p.m.
