Lady Bucs use long ball to down Grafton, 13-4

GRAFTON – Opponents are going to have to get used to the ball flying out of the park when the Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buc softball team shows up on their schedule.

After building a big lead against Grafton, Sydney Fletcher and Alli Robinson put the cherry on top with a pair of home runs as the Lady Bucs cruised to a 13-4 victory in five innings in a Big 10 Conference battle.

“The smash sisters – Alli and Sydney – had no-doubt home runs,” remarked B-U head coach Levi Bender.

Bender also noted that it was another team that came up with that nickname for Alli and Sydney, not him or his team.

Buckhannon-Upshur wasted little time in jumping on the Lady Bearcats as they scored four times in the top of the first inning.

Hailey Thompson cleared the bases with a single and a Grafton error on the play allowed three runners to score.

Brooklyn Robinson then hit a ground out that scored Thompson to treat the Lady Bucs to a 4-0 lead.

The Lady Bucs scored four more in the top of the second.

They benefited from two walks, two Grafton errors and a two-run single by Ciara Melton for an 8-0 lead.

Grafton scored a run in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly by Amber Smith.

Buckhannon-Upshur made it 11-1 with a trio of runs in the top of third inning.

Shelby McDaniels scored Audrey Gaudet on a ground out and Fletcher uncorked her home run with a blast over the center field fence that scored Alli Robinson.

Grafton answered with three runs in their half of the third, but Alyssa Rohr singled home Brooklyn Robinson in the top of the fourth to make it a 12-4 contest.

Alli Robinson wrapped up the scoring with her solo blast in the top of the fifth.

The Lady Bucs collected eight hits in the shortened game with Rohr leading the way with two.

“Our offense was full force and battled at the plate and plugged in when we need them,” said Bender. “Especially the top of the line-up. Alyssa Rohr is our lead-off batter and she went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases.”

Melton evened her record at 1-1 in a complete-game effort. She gave up just one earned run on five hits and struck out four.

“Ciara pitched a solid game,” stated Bender. “She was never in jeopardy, but she kept her focus and kept their hitters off balance.”

The Lady Bucs, now 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the Big 10 Conference, were slated to play Braxton County on Thursday.

Their scheduled game with Morgantown on Monday was cancelled.

They will return to action today as they visit John Marshall for a 5 p.m. contest.

They will stay in the northern panhandle and play another game with John Marshall Saturday at noon and then Williamstown at 2 p.m.
