Lady Bucs upset by Bridgeport, beat Preston in sectional tournament

The Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buc defense gets Bridgeport’s Maci Cook (10) caught in a run down during the fifth inning of their sectional softball tournament clash Tuesday at the high school. The Lady Bucs dropped a 15-7 decision to the Indians, but bounced back on Wednesday to eliminate Preston by a 14-0 score.

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur softball team was upset in their first game of the Region I, Section 2 tournament opener Tuesday evening by the Bridgeport Indians by a 15-7 score.

The Lady Bucs had handled Bridgeport twice in the regular season by 10-2 and 12-2 scores.

With the game tied at 4-4 in the fifth inning, Bridgeport scored seven times in the inning to pull away for the victory.

“The game just got away from us,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Levi Bender. “Bridgeport found the holes and we didn’t. We didn’t quit, it was just one of those innings where they caught us, and the momentum and the flood gates opened up for them.”

The Lady Bucs took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Megan Bailey singled and scored on a single by Robin Ball and Shelby McDaniels reached on a walk and scored when Kennedy Samargo was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Bridgeport tied it with a pair of runs in the top of the third but the Lady Bucs answered with two of their own in the bottom of the third when Brooklyn Robinson came home on a single by Samargo and Jensen Kimble raced home on a sacrifice fly by Hayden Peters making it a 4-2 game.

Bridgeport tied it with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth then had their seven-run fifth inning for an 11-4 lead.

The Lady Bucs managed one run in the bottom of the fifth when Robinson tripled and came home on a single by Peters.

Bridgeport tacked on four more in the top of the sixth for a 15-5 lead.

Ball hit a two-run single to wrap up the scoring in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Bailey led the B-U 12-hit attack with three while Ball, McDaniels and Robinson each had two.

Kimble (8-9) started the game and went four innings giving up five earned runs on eight hits while striking out four.

McDaniels twirled the final two innings and gave up four earned runs on six hits while fanning two.

The next day, the Lady Bucs faced Preston in an elimination game at home and cruised to a 14-0 win.

Ball just missed out hitting for the cycle while collecting five RBIs. She lacked getting a single, while hitting a double, triple and home run in the game.

McDaniels broke the team’s all-time record for doubles in a single season with 17, collecting a double in the bottom of the fourth. The old record belonged to Brooklyn Waddell with 16.

McDaniels (2-2) also pitched a four-hit shutout for the Lady Bucs as they eliminated Preston from the tournament.

“She fought through some trouble throughout the game,” noted Bender. “Preston had some long at-bats and she struggled finding the strike zone but still managed to keep them off the scoreboard. That shows you what type of competitor she is.”

The Lady Bucs took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first behind a one-run double from McDaniels, a one-run triple from Ball, a one-run double from Robinson and a one-run single from Samargo.

The Lady Bucs sent nine batters to the plate in the second inning for a five-run outburst taking a 9-0 lead.

Ball hit a two-run home run and Robinson doubled and scored on a ground out by Peters in the bottom of the third to up their lead to 12-0.

They scored two more in the bottom of the fourth on a Ball double that upped their lead to 14-0.

The game was halted after the fifth inning on the mercy rule.

The Lady Bucs had 14 hits with Robinson leading the way with four while McDaniels and Ball each had three.

“We came out and really adjusted our swings and our mindset,” stated Bender. “We didn’t try to do too much with what we were given. Offensively, Bailey has done a fantastic job leading off for us, Ball hit a monster home run, and Robinson has really bought into her swing adjustments and the results are showing.”

The action left the Lady Bucs with a 10-11 record.

They were slated to play Bridgeport Thursday in an elimination game but that was rained out and moved to Friday.

The winner of that game will play University needing to beat them twice for the sectional championship. The date of that game(s) was undecided at press time.
