TENNERTON — Head Coach Jackie Zuliani’s Buckhannon-Upshur High School track team picked up another win in the small seven-team meet they Lady Buccaneers hosted at Freal “Red” Crites Memorial Field last week on Tuesday, April 26. The Lady Bucs collected seven individual event wins and saw three relay teams take home wins as they raced past the competition. The Lady Bucs collected 168 team points, well ahead of second-place Fairmont Senior’s 102 team points. East Fairmont took a third-place finish with 75 team points, South Harrison finished fourth with 69 team points, Elkins finished fifth with 66 team points, Webster County finished sixth with 27 team points, while Tucker County with 17 team points rounded out the seven team field.
Sophomore Alison Andrew got the Lady Bucs day started with a solid fifth-place finish in the 100-meter dash with a time of 14.44 seconds. Andrew’s outing secured the Lady Bucs’ first of many, team points on the day. Senior Catherine Oliveto picked up the Lady Bucs first win of the day in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.69 seconds. The senior dominated the field in the 200-meter dash with a time of 1:03.09. Freshman Samantha Shreve stole the show, as the medium distance specialist scored wins in both the 1600-meter and the 3200-meter run, with times of 5:36.22 and 12:07.74, respectively. Junior Chloe Cale sped through the 33” hurdles in 17.91 seconds, cruising to her first of two wins on the day. Cale’s second win came in her best event, the long jump, where she leaped 15’ 8” and one-half inches to defend her home field. Senior Cameron Zuliani took the win in the 300-meter hurdles, clearing the 30” obstacles in just 51.42 seconds. Zuliani won the discus toss event with a throw that traveled 116’ 3” to claim the Lady Bucs last of seven individual wins on the day.
In addition to a highly successful day in terms of individual events, the Lady Bucs’ relay pairings also stood out, taking three wins on the day. First, the 4x200-meter relay team, consisting of junior Dezi Pugh, Oliveto, Zuliani, and Cale won with a time of 1:52.71. The Lady Bucs second relay win came in the 4x800-meter relay, as the combination of sophomores Miah Reger, Mia Sappey, junior Ashley Caitlyn, and Shreve claimed victory with a combined time of 10:58.14. This small-meet home win is just the latest in a series of dominate performances for coach Zuliani’s 2022 edition of the Lady Buccaneer track team. As the season winds down, the Lady Bucs will seek to keep the wins coming as they look to make their way to Charleston.
