Lady Bucs to open basketball season tonight at home against rival Lewis County Minutemaids

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buc basketball team will tip off their 2019-20 season tonight when they host the Lewis County Minutemaids.

The varsity contest will start at 7:30 p.m. with the junior varsity contest set to begin at 5:45 p.m.

The Lady Bucs went through their final preparations this week for the home opener with a scrimmage against the Lincoln Cougars on Tuesday.

“I saw some good things from the scrimmage,” remarked second-year Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Rob Kittle. “There were certainly things that we can build upon. That said, there are still plenty of things that we need to work on as well. I hope we will be ready to go tonight. With it being a rivalry game that always adds a little something to it.”

The Lady Bucs defeated Lewis County in a close contest by a 66-61 score in their only meeting last season.

Lewis County will have a new coach in charge this season as longtime assistant coach Kenton Bozic will lead the Minutemaids this season after Ben Whetsell stepped down during the off-season.

“They have a new coach that will add his own wrinkles to the team, so it’s hard to get an idea of exactly what we will see tonight from them,” stated Kittle. “I know they have a couple of kids back from last year that are extremely talented players.”

Kittle said he was still pondering his starting five for tonight’s opener.

“We have been banged up this preseason,” noted Kittle. “We only had 11 at Wednesday’s practice. So the starting lineup right now is still a work in progress.”

Following tonight’s opener, the Lady Bucs will finish the calendar year with five straight road games starting on Monday with the Elkins Lady Tigers.
