Lady Bucs take top honors at Herbert Hoover Invite

Buckhannon-Upshur’s Catherine Oliveto brings home four victories at Hoover

CHARLESTON – Buckhannon-Upshur freshman Catherine Oliveto made the most of her first invitational track and field for the Lady Bucs last Friday in the Herbert Hoover Invitational at Laidley Field.

Oliveto individually provided the Lady Bucs 40 points as she won four events.

She took firsts in the 100-meter dash (13.26), the 200-meter dash (27.37), the 400-meter dash (1:02.03) and the long jump (14-08.25).

“Catherine had a great meet and looked very good,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jackie Zuliani. “She has natural speed and we are working on a few form issues and she is going to keep getting faster and faster. I thought for sure that she had a faster time in the 1000, but they said otherwise. She looked much better. If she keeps working hard, it’s going to be to fun to see where she ends up by the time the state meet gets here.”

The 4 x 400-meter relay team picked up the other first place for the Lady Bucs.

The foursome of Yami Cerna, Cameron Zuliani, Makenzi Lewellyn and Kennedi Lewellyn ran a time of 4:36.62.

The five victories propelled the Lady Bucs to first place in the team standings with 110 points.

Charleston Catholic was second with 92 points while Point Pleasant was third with 75.

The Lady Bucs pulled in a trio of runner-up spots, two individual and one relay team.

Zuliani took second in the discus throw with a heave of 101-04 while Makenzi Lewellyn was second in the pole vault clearing 9-00.00.

The 4 x 102.5-meter shuttle hurdle team of Makenzi Lewellyn, Kierra Arbogast, Zuliani and Iris Kolenich clocked a 1:18.12.

Picking up the lone third for the Lady Bucs was Makenzi Lewellyn in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:04.95.

Buckhannon-Upshur picked up five fourth places.

Individually, Kolenich in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 18.40 and the high jump clearing 4-08.00, Breanna Morgan in the discus throw with a toss of 93-03 and McKenzie Reynolds in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 54.87.

The 4 x 200-meter relay foursome of Cerna, Zuliani, Makenzi Lewellyn and Oliveto also took a fourth with time of 2:00.47.

“Iris was solid in the hurdles and high jump,” noted Zuliani. “She is also a great relay runner and anchored our 4 x 100-meter relay and shuttles team. Makenzi Lewellyn had a great meet too. She and her sister Kennedi work very hard and have come a long way in this sport. She got a personal best in the pole vole at 9-0 and had a very nice 400-meter dash. She is also a great addition to our relays. Kennedi was unable to compete due to a concussion from lacrosse.”

The Lady Bucs were slated to host their weekly meet on Tuesday.

They will return to action Saturday in the Morgantown Invitational.

“Overall, it was perfect weather for a meet and the girls were all ready to compete,” concluded Zuliani. “I am proud of how everyone competed and it was definitely a team effort.”
