MORGANTOWN – Cadence Vincent, Alayna Whitehair and Cameron Zuliani each won two events for the Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buc swimmers in their home dual meet with the Elkins Tigers Thursday evening at the WVWC pool.
The Lady Bucs competed in nine events overall and won all nine – seven individual and two relay victories.
Vincent won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 52.49 and then swam her personal best in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:10.70.
Whitehair took first place in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:14.61) and the 200-yard freestyle (2:10.38) while Zuliani won the 50-yard freestyle (25.64) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:41.49).
The other individual win went to freshman Lillian Fetty who won the 100-yard backstroke (1:17.42).
“Cadence was once again in record-breaking form, rebreaking her own 200 IM time from the previous year,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head swim coach Will Squires. “We had some great swims from a few girls who swam atypical events to maximize our success on the evening. Both Zuliani and Whitehair won the 500 free and 200 free respectively, events both swimmers have never done in high school before. I was very pleased with everyone’s effort and our lone freshman, Lillian Fetty, who swam a great 100 backstroke to grasp her first individual win of the season.”
The foursome of Zuliani, Beth O’Neill, McKenzie Reynolds and Vincent won the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:57.23) and the foursome of Vincent, Whitehair, Zuliani and Reynolds took the 200-yard medley relay (1:57.42).
Despite the Lady Bucs winning nine events they dropped the team score with Elkins having more swimmers compete by a 137-93 score.
“Although Elkins’ number were double our team’s, we had a great showing by our athletes, winning every event in which we had a swimmer entered,” stated Squires.
The Lady Bucs honored their two seniors during the meet – McKenzie Reynolds and Beth O’Neill.
“We recognized our three seniors as well as the six seniors from Elkins, who were unable to host a meet this season,” said Squires.
The Lady Bucs were slated to swim Saturday at the Harrison County YMCA facing Robert C. Byrd and Liberty.
Their scheduled meets this week with Bridgeport and George Washington will not take place.
They will now move on to the Big 10 Conference Championships this Saturday at the Harrison County YMCA.
