Lady Bucs swim to fourth-place finish at Splash Williams Invitational home meet

Emma Reger competes in the backstroke for the Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buc swim team during their home meet, the Splash Williams Invitational, this past Saturday at West Virginia Wesleyan College. Reger finished ninth in the backstroke with a time of 1:16.95. The Lady Bucs finished fourth overall with 155 points.

BUCKHANNON – Sophomore Cameron Zuliani claimed the top two spots for the Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buc swimmers in their Splash Williams Invitational home meet this past Saturday at the West Virginia Wesleyan College pool.

Zuliani took first place against 12 other swimmers in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:02.59 and earned runner-up honors in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 57.67.

The Lady Bucs picked up eight more individual top 10 finishes.

Freshman Alayna Whitehair earned a pair of thirds in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:17.10) and the 200-yard IM (2:226.56).

Jenny Williams placed fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:19.72) and ninth in the 200-yard IM (2:41.18).

Merrody Malone finished seventh in the 100-yard butterfly (1:14.72) and eighth in the 500-yard freestyle (6:52.67).

McKenzie Reynolds claimed seventh in the 100-yard freestyle (1:04.98) and Emma Reger took ninth in the 100-yard backstroke.

All three relay teams had top-five finishes.

The 400-yard freestyle team of Whitehair, Abby Loudin, Reynolds and Zuliani took fourth with a time of 4:19.34, the 200-yard freestyle unit of Williams, Malone, Olivia Caynor and Zuliani placed fifth with a clocking of 1:59.93 and the 200-yard medley relay foursome of Reger, Williams, Malone and Reynolds placed fifth with a time of 2:14.46.

The Lady Bucs placed fourth as a unit with 155 points in the 11-team event.

Bridgeport took first with 256 points while Parkersburg was second with 252 and Morgantown was third with 171 points.

“Overall it was a great meet,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Will Squires. “We had a lot of great swims after a very challenging week of practices. We've been trying to really focus on getting into shape the last two weeks, so many swimmers were a little off their best times, but in comparison to this point last season, we are looking much stronger.”

The Lady Bucs will return to the pool Saturday, Dec. 7 in the Mohawk Invite at the Mylan Park Aquatic Center.
