MORGANTOWN — Head Coach Levi Bender and the Buckhannon-Upshur High School Lady Buccaneer softball team got their 2022 campaign underway with a trip up North for a contest against the University Hawks in the season opener.
The Lady Bucs had a tough day all around, having a no-hitter during a 10-0 loss to the Hawks. Despite the loss, coach Bender was hopeful with his team’s performance against a talented University team. “We were no-hit, but generally played well overall. We were pitted up against a very good team with a solid pitcher giving us some tough looks when we were up to bat. I’d say we shot ourselves in the foot somewhat with defensive miscues, but when you get no-hit, that tends to be the focus. Going forward, I think there were a lot of good signs for our team if you read between the lines in the stats to find them.”
The Hawks had big offensive innings in the second and fourth, scoring all 10 of their runs in those two innings. The pitcher/catcher duo of Jansen Kimble and Shelby McDaniels put together a solid outing, but with players filling in new roles and with a lack of practice time under their belt, the Lady Bucs defense committed 7 unforced errors.
With the loss, the Lady Bucs drop to 0-1 in the young 2022 season. This week the Lady Bucs will look to rebound with three games in three games, starting on Tuesday with a trip to Preston, followed by a road game against Lincoln, before returning home to take on North Marion.
